It's "a cliché" to say that America "is the greatest country on Earth," Pres. Obama told a DNC event in New York City on Monday.

"And more than anything, what I will be striving for over the next three and a half years is to see if that spirit that I saw in Boston and West, Texas, if we can institutionalize that, if we can create a framework where everybody is working together and moving this country forward.

"Now, the good news is that if we do that, we've got the best cards of any country on Earth -- and that's the truth. Look, there's no American politician, much less American President, who's not going to say that we're not the greatest country on Earth. So that's a cliché. On the other hand, objectively, when you look at where we are right now, we are poised for a 21st century that is as much the American century as the 20th century was."

Earlier in his remarks, Obama said that Americans all have "the same sense" that their country is the greatest:

In a very literal sense, what he says is true. But this is one of those statements that tells you more about the person saying it than the truth of the statement. You don’t need to make a point of telling certain truths and if you do, its because you have a bad motive. For instance, your spouse may be overweight or out of shape but it can be hurtful to point that out. It may be true but you don’t say it.

Don’t you realize he deliberately places those phrases to get the angry irrational responses seen here on FR. Meanwhile when the whole of his speech is digested it is clear that he can say he meant no such thing. Then the Right comes across as harpies looking for any means to attack Obama, no matter how trivial. Of course he believes the phrase is a cliche but he placed it strategically amid words of praise for America and Americans so that he can say it to his faithful, but when we attack him he can just say read the whole statement. We have to get much less emotional and far more factual. Follow the evidence before elevating the rhetoric. The evidence will win out.

Name one who is always there for everybody else, who sets a higher standard of idealism to strive for, has fed more people, has freed more people, has educated more people, has defended more people. That poor family from Germany about to be deported only because they fled persecution from not wanting their children indoctrinated in government propaganda education, to Ted Cruz voting to help displace American workers be voting to expand a portion of the H-1B program, to 49% of the population living on the dole.
