Harper government clear on its goal to bring down ‘hollow’ Iranian regime
National Post ^ | May 14, 2013 | Joseph Brean

The Conservative government said Tuesday it would boycott a United Nations disarmament conference chaired by Iran — currently targeted by sanctions over its rogue nuclear arms program — on the grounds that it makes a “mockery” of the effort against arms proliferation. It is the latest sign of a new boldness in Canada’s stance against the Islamic Republic.

Since late last year, Canada has recalled its diplomats from Tehran, expelled Iran’s from Ottawa, openly called for regime change, condemned next month’s Iranian elections as a “cynical charade,” expanded economic sanctions, and praised Israel for a bombing raid inside Syria against Iranian-backed Hezbollah arms shipments. Ottawa’s increasingly vocal and outward enmity toward one particular autocratic regime demonstrates a targeted hostility rarely seen out of Ottawa, and perhaps not since the Second World War. The Conservatives are hardly being shy about their intent: They want the current Iranian leadership gone.

John Baird, the Foreign Minister, has launched a social media campaign to incite democratic opposition to the Iranian regime, both globally and behind the country’s notorious “Halal” Internet firewall, which blocks access to foreign sites after 60 seconds.

“The people mock ‘Halal’ Internet for the ridiculous proposition that it is,” Mr. Baird said at a University of Toronto conference last weekend to launch Global Dialogue on the Future of Iran, which broadcasts academic debates over the web in Farsi and English under special security settings to protect anonymity, thwart censors, and encourage dissident communities.

Harper is getting pretty ballsey for a man whose nation has only a scant 100,000 men and women in its military.

Lets see if Canada is ready to become an object of the “jihad.”

Canada has been and is, as you put it, "an object of the "jihad"".

In fact, I'm not sure that Iran is not at war with Canada, in the same way it is at war with the US and Israel. It is a low level war for certain, and I know Canada is not fully engaged.

Hockey is the Canadian national sport.

All the other team sports require only one ball.

LOL. Right on.

I expect we will also have jihadi hockey players who don’t give a puck about anyone. Bombs at the rink?

I praise Harper for his position by the way.I just hope he has the borders prepared and his powder dry. Can’t blame him for being pished at Iran, they have allowed Al Qaeda to direct the activities of jihadists right there along the Rideau Canal and the Saint Lawrence.

Harper has sent a message to Iran.Come to this face off at your peril! But will the McKenzie Brothers become Tehran hosers? We will have to see.

I like Harper... his job is not an easy one with all the leftist lunatic nonsense Canada has endured for the last couple of decades...

I was so happy when Harper finally achieved a majority in the House.

His road is not an easy one. He has rebuilt Canada in the face of tremendous opposition, undoing much of the horrible debacle of demographic warfare initiated by the liberal fascist, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the most heinious politician in Canada’s history.

We need a booming economy. To do that he should somehow detach Canada fuel prices from world market prices. We have enough fuel to suit our own needs in Canada and we should be paying about fifty cents a liter. If he did that for a limited period of 5 years, our national economy would zoom. Its a small price to ask Canada’s oil companies to pay, they have made out like bandits for generations.

The necessary pipelines to accomplish this should be build trans Canada.

If anyone knows how to deal with nationalist socialists, it is Stephen Harper. And he has Obama dead in his sights, and I can hardly wait to watch him tweak our foreign policy. This position against Iran is just the beginning.Watch for future pronouncements on Israel.

BTW, anyone can subscribe to Harpers personal news letter
and press releases via e-mail.

Justin Trudeau is a psychopomp.

A mindless socialist who would ruin the Canadian Economy and out Canada even further down the dead end road of European Socialism.

Like his father , he is a fascist, a demagogue who will have no hesitation to renew the demographic and cultural warfare waged against Canadians by his father.

Harper is quite right in attacking Just In Trudeau.Truth, ridicule and exposure are effective tools against national socialism, and Harper should have no hesitation to continue to use them. Winston Churchill also did so, as did Maggie Thatcher, putting the left into paroxysms of extreme rage, right where they do themselves the most damage.

So, you want the rightful owners and producers of this product to relinquish their profits for "the greater good". I can't decide if that is fascism or communism. Help me out.

Canadians pay the world price for oil plus taxes. Distorting the free market for "the greater good" has never worked, will not work now, and will not work in the future.

Nah , not religuish profits, just allocate a 5 year market control board for fuel just like has been done with dairy products in the past. Just a temporary 5 year injection of fuel into the hands of the people.Government could help fund the several pipelines that aid in this and we can get the pay back for 5 years. Some kind of arrangement like that. We do need an east west pipe line, across the country. The port of Saint John New Brunswick has been hollaring for a line for years. It has become a political embarassment that it has not been done.

With all of the incentives/breaks given to the oil industry in Canada over the years, they owe us a break so we can get things rolling, and we can create the necessary pipe line to do so.At the same time we can export from both coasts.

THe USA pipeline from Alberta to Texas is toast. Its not foregoing of profits. Its quid pro quo on a trans Canada pipe line.

As a consumer of dairy products, poultry products, and energy products I am against marketing boards for obvious reasons. What you are actually advocating is opposite to a marketing board, but we will leave that for now.

Government does not have to fund any pipelines. Private capital is poised to fund and build pipelines from Hardisty to Kitimat BC, to Cushing OK, and to Saint John NB. Talk to the governments of BC, the USA, and Quebec as to why these are not being built.

The Keystone pipeline will be built, unless the US descends into fascism, which seems to be happening right now.

The Keystone Pipeline will never be built. The USA is to heavily invested with politial and financial controls from Saudi Arabia and environmentalists who believe in the religion of alternate renewable energy. Obama himself is fixed by the policy due to his obvious loyalty to the Saudis. The Saudis do not want Candian oil coming into the USA.That will be the end of it unless there is a war that interdicts the flow of oil from the ME.

Canada has a huge potential to market energy resources independent of the USA, and we need to get on with it.

I disagree with the necessity of a fuel marketing board, your ideas are invested with the traditional view that price controls are against the idea of a free market economy. The same tyoe of arguments were nmade in relatiuon to he trans Canada Highway system and the trans Canada Railway system, during the years when those debates were being heard.

IOts time for a trans canada oil pipeline system, and the government can exercise its policy to bring it about quickly. The private funding for the oil ppipeline is like insisting on private funding for electricity transmission across Canada. That would never have worked across the country.

I believe that we could do that and the pay back for Canadians should be cheap fuel for a term certain. Our economy would boom at the individual and corporate local entrepreneurial level. Thats what is needed in Canada. We have the means to do it. I think is a great idea.

And Harper is the man to get it done.

Umm, no, I did not advocate marketing boards for oil. I am against all marketing boards and market meddling by government. Read my posts.

Keystone will be built, it might require a regime change in the US or a change of heart by Obama, perhaps as a distraction to the economic collapse or impending scandals.

Once again, there is plenty of private capital available for pipelines in Canada. Building a pipeline is like owning a mint.

Government meddling and market distortion usually have the opposite affect to that intended. Have subsidies for corn to alcohol to gasoline gained lower fuel prices or just higher food prices?

Harper is a conservative economist by training. He knows that all he has to do is get the freaking lefties out of the way and the pipelines will be built.

If that works I am all for it, but we need cheap fuel as a people, for a few years.Whatever works my good man.

Canada is the luckiest country in the world. We have huge energy and agricultural resources and a large percentage of the world's fresh water.

What we don't need, or want, is a morally bankrupt, economically weak fascist state as a neighbor.

You mean like the modern family compact that dictates economic processes in Canada under the false myth of effective competition between businesses?

As to whether the USA is morally bankrupt or not, that remains to be seen, but never a nickel was earned from Canadian smugness , that ever bought anything more that a civit cats fart. And we need to get on with it becasue if theUSA does become fascist, how long do you think it will take before they turn North and TAKE what they need?

We have tremendous resources, and we need to build the infrastructire to use them ourselves and export the results. Being hewers of wood and drawers of water will not satisfy us Canadians much longer.

As a people we need cheap energy for a roll out period.

No smugness. I never used that word or thought about it much until this week. What we know right now about the IRS scandal is about 5% of what really went on.

Agreed.A lot of it is coming out on Fox cable News though, individuals and groups

There is a Tea Party Press Conference tommorrow comprised of many dozens of Tea Party Groups who had applied for tax exempt status, some 2 years or more ago. They will demand immediate tax exempt status by Friday or they plan an immediate class action suit against the US government, based on a violation of their 1st amendment, due process , and civil rights. The damages will be in the billions.
