IG report: ‘Inappropriate criteria’ stalled IRS approvals of conservative groups (Whitewash?)
Washington Post ^ | May 14, 2013 | By Juliet Eilperin and Zachary A. Goldfarb

Federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation of whether Internal Revenue Service employees broke the law when they targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status — the latest setback for an agency that is the subject of withering bipartisan criticism and multiple congressional inquiries.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Tuesday that the Justice Department and the FBI began the probe after the IRS acknowledged that it selected conservative groups with the words “tea party” and “patriot” in their names for special reviews.

“We are examining the facts to see if there were criminal violations,” Holder said at a news conference.

Also Tuesday, a widely anticipated report by the IRS’s watchdog described the agency’s tax-exempt unit — where the screening of conservative groups occurred — as a bureaucratic mess, with some employees ignorant about tax laws, defiant of their supervisors and blind to the appearance of impropriety.

-----------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------

The report did not find evidence that the actions were motivated by partisan interests. IRS officials told investigators they did not consult anyone outside the agency about the screening. . .

I guess you didn’t read my post. I know a brain-dead Lib/Prog who is deeply troubled by the IRS scandal. If this particular Lib/Prog is troubled, then without doubt there’s a whole hell of a lot more of them out there also, guaranteed.

I read your post, and I voiced doubts as to your conclusion that “this cuts across ideological lines.” I explained my reasoning as well.

As I said, I hope you’re right.

If you knew this particular Lib/Prog, you’d have no doubts that many others are troubled as well. As for the great unwashed middle-of-the-roaders, those unprincipled “independents” that both parties constantly obsess about, if the GOP plays their hand wisely, the 2014 midterms will put be a blowout that dwarfs 2010.

...if the GOP plays their hand wisely...

Pretty big "if" there. ;)

Maybe it'll happen. 2010 certainly happened.

My recollection is that 2010 came from the "grass roots," but maybe 2014 will come from there too.

If the people aren't motivated, the big shots in DC can't do much even if they want to.

These abuses involved enough people and enough communication that there should be evidence. The super PAC donors that began telling stories today of their tax records being made public can establish circumstantial evidence. There will be a documentary record of the 501(c) applicants who were abused. Investigators can trace these cases to specific clerks and supervisors who can be deposed under oath.

And if by some miracle the Washington press digs into this story they will shake out some whistle blowers. The problem with criminal conspiracies is that by necessity they require more than one person to effect. Almost always there are weak links who will rat everybody out for immunity.

DHS under Napolitano is the same. Wait until THAT shoe drops.

Impeachment of Obama and half his cabinet is in order as Obama fascism attempts to impose Hopey Changey on the Constitution of the USA.

it’s nobody’s fault, just a misapplication of rules by people who were never trained properly. let’s sink a few million dollars into training on how not to get caught.
