A new biography covering Chancellor Angela Merkels life in East Germany has caused a stir by suggesting she was closer to the communist apparatus and its ideology than previously thought.
Published this week and written by journalists Günther Lachmann and Ralf Georg Reuth, the book quotes Gunter Walther, a former colleague of hers at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin, as saying she had been secretary for Agitation and Propaganda in the Freie Deutsche Jugend (FDJ) youth organization at the institute. Merkel, a trained physicist, worked at the academy from 1978 until 1989.
Merkel has said in the past that her FDJ role at the academy was more that of a cultural secretary and that her duties included buying theater tickets and organizing book readings. But former German Transport Minister Günther Krausean eastern German politician who worked with her in the final months of the GDR and as a fellow minister in the government ex-chancellor Helmut Kohl in the early 1990scontradicts her in the book, and says she propagated Marxism-Leninism. With Agitation and Propaganda, youre responsible for brainwashing in the sense of Marxism, he said. That was her task, and that wasnt cultural work.

Better question: How Close IS 0bama to the Communist System?
Yeah, even Thomas Sowell started out a Marxist. It goes with the stupidity and vacuity of youth. Sowell grew out of it. Angela did, too.
I think that’s been answered.
In East Germany, what choice did she have?
Look what Europe has become. It wasn’t that long ago when brave young Americans fought back a tyrant from hell and gave Germany and the rest of Europe back their freedom. Then, after America defeated that demon, the great bear from the north starting spreading communism throughout Europe with little push back except from America. Then Europe welcomes a fanatical religion terrorizing the world. But, who am I to complain. America is heading in the same direction.
If that were true, then she would be a firm opponent of the social market economy as well. Instead, she’s actively strengthened that system, to the point where economists in the EUSSR are calling for the death of the “Anglo-Saxon capitalist model” even though Anglo-Saxon liberals have been working to destroy Anglo-Saxon capitalism anyway.
Could’ve worked in some other department.
I’ll give her a pass based on her performance since then.
Knowing a little...but no more than a little...about Germany in general and *East* Germany in particular...one could possibly overlook certain activities of some East Germans.A few things I do know about East Germany...it was a prison...East German government records (examined after the Wall came down) showed that one in eight....more than 10% of the population...were Stasi informants.Husbands informed on wives, children informed on their parents, and parents informed on their children. And East German sports officials gave female athletes male hormones on a routine basis. If one cooperated to a degree with the government it could,in some cases at least,be seen as an act of self preservation in one of the most vicious, repressive nations to have ever existed.
You mean working to turn the EU into the biggest enemy of Anglo-Saxon capitalism, even a bigger enemy than Maoist communism?
Newsflash: Boris Yeltsin was also a communist...before he wasn’t...gasp.
Ain’t that a surprise. Something tells me that Russia never actually gave up communism.
The European Union is permeated with communists, fascists and even Nazis of all shades. They don’t just go away, especially in a union who has a planned economy (the social market economy) by treaty and whose central government in Brussels is based on the USSR’s government.
John Kerry was for communism before ... he was for it.
