Cumulus Media: Suicide of a Company?
American Spectator ^ | 5-14-2013 | Jeffrey Lord

Let’s talk.

Let’s talk talk radio.

Specifically, let’s talk Cumulus Media and all those stories like this one about Cumulus being unhappy with Rush Limbaugh.

You know what the Big Story is here?

For once, this is a Big Story in talk radio that really isn’t about Rush Limbaugh at all. And the same Big Story isn’t about Sean Hannity either, although Hannity’s name has been thrown into the mix.

The Big Story here is this:

What in the world is going on at Cumulus Media?

What’s with this very, very discernible pattern that should be obvious as the sun — to Cumulus investors. Which is to say Cumulus shareholders. Not to mention all those journalists and dopey liberal Rush Limbaugh haters like the Daily Beast or Media Matters. The latter two whose willful ignorance of the facts makes them look — well, to be gentle — laughable.

Let’s refresh and detail, shall we?

The Dickey Brothers, that would be Lew and John by name, run Cumulus Media. Cumulus Media. Which less than 24 months ago bought Citadel Broadcasting and several large AM talk stations (like the flagship WABC in New York) that run conservative talk programs, in particular those of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, both huge money-makers.

It now seems clear that the Dickeys, who up until then were small and mid-market radio station managers, bit off much more than they can chew. Among other things, the Dickeys may have overpaid for the stations Cumulus purchased.

--------------------

Cumulus repeatedly draws starkly negative reviews for its treatment of employees, such as this one, which has a mere 28% of Cumulus employees saying they would recommend the company to a friend.

Cumulus trashed our local AM 640 morning line up.

Got rid of all the folks here in town. We used to have a good mix of news, politics and general talk from 6:00 AM to noon when Rush came on. The it was only to ten, then nine, finally the 8 to 9 line up was changed to info, real estate stuff.

Now I don’t even tune in until noon and Rush.

Where he goes I’ll follow.

Where do the Dickey’s live? Who do they and their spouses socialize with?

It is hilarious, in a perverse way. It is like Rush is protected. Like Israel. LOL. Those who hate him and want to destroy him end up harming themselves.

—— liberal Rush Limbaugh haters like the Daily Beast-——

Last evening, Daily Beast staffer Kirsten Powers serving on Brett’s panel declared that the President and “They” were liars. The effort is lies.

This is the first use of the liar word referring directly to the president on Fox News. It was uttered by a Daily Beast type.

I read the article, it’s a good one and gives a lot of good background information. What I got out of it is that the Cumulus Media Owners are,(from my estimation), a couple of corporate raider types.

They will buy a station and soon thereafter do what they can to maximize profits and cheapen it by getting rid of expensive hosts and sometimes changing formats to “cheaper” alternatives. The article uses the J.C. Penny experience with the two guys that used to be with Apple several times. They didn’t understand who their customers ultimately were and tried to change the business to cater to a “imaginary” base of customers.

The end results for both Cumulus and J.C. Penny may be the destruction of these businesses, bringing ruin to their employees and their customer base reviling them and refusing to have any further doings with them. The winners in this are the ones who did the destruction and walked away with a tidy sum from the cannibalization of the business.

But there is something to think about here also, Radio and talk radio in particular will be dying out as the younger “crowd” prefer to listen to music and podcasts via their personal “net connected” devices. And the people who are in the 40’s and older who do listen to Radio will one day be no-longer in the coveted age-groups that spend their money on what advertisers are selling. It’s a changing dynamic still, it will be interesting to see how this all works out.

You said it!

Look for Rush in the process to also end up taking Sean and Mark, it was him who made their careers POSSIBLE.

It’s business. If they dump Limbaugh and put Huckabee in his place and if Huckabee attracts at least half the audience Limbaugh did and if they can then sell all the advertising they had to give Limbaugh as part of the contract and if they can get close to the same rates as they did before then they make more money than if they signed Limbaugh again. A lot of ‘ifs’ but they rake in a ton of money if they’re right. So it’s purely financial. Limbaugh, of all people, should understand that.

Rush could very well take a second place local radio station and make it a powerhouse in its own right, what WABC AM has now. Plus end up taking with him, both Sean and Mark whom Rush made their careers posibile.

Rush talked a little about this the other day. He said the fault was with advertising agency liberal sales people who tell buyers that they are going to put out a million ads on hit radio/tv shows (Fox & Rush) and then actually give the buyer’s money to CNN - basically to prop up the liberal agenda. I think that’s what he said. Rush knows the truth about all of this but he’s somewhat reluctant to speak out forcefully.
