MY MOTHER fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.
We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Perhaps she just had a BOOB job... She is getting older ... And this is her ploy to both garner sympathy and get the girls to sit up and pay attention.
I don’t think I’d look at this as “maiming.” I mean, it’s the removal of fat glands on your chest, not an arm or leg. You can certainly live and function perfectly well without them. It’s just that “society” considers you deformed if your mammary glands are not covered with an observable abundance of fatty tissue, so yeah there’s psychological “maiming” if that’s what you’re saying.

This seems to be happening more and more... A TV anchorwoman here is Pittsburgh had it done. I just hope the doctors and scientists know what they are doing.
I fear “they” are trying to condition everyone. They got most people to abort certain babies (Down’s), they are now trying to get people to mindlessly obey what scientists and doctors tell us. Maybe it was the right decision for her, maybe not. Do they really know enough to say she has an 87% chance of getting breast cancer? I doubt it. I hope she gets the support she needs.
Actually, the BRCA test is a covered test in most private and public health plans. My wife and daughters all had the test in the States when we lived there. My wife was diagnosed here in the UK. Diagnosed on a Friday, surgery six days later.
Ever lost anyone to cancer?? My mother and mother-in-law both died of BC. In my mother's case, it has spread into the skin. She was one open sore around her entire upper torso. Horrible.
As a result, my wife was VERY attentive to symptoms, and when a very small one appeared in a mammogram, had a double mastectomy and soon enough that she didn't even need chemo and had zero lymph node involvement. The lady who cleans my house also had a double. IMO, the smartest option available.
My sister-in-law also had it, but caught it a bit later. She had to have several lymph nodes removed, and chemo. She did NOT have a double. Again, IMO, not very bright.

I am sorry to report that I agree with this sentiment. This woman is an adulteress, pro choice, pro gay marriage liberal Hollywood icon who influences countless young people towards secular atheism and socialism/liberalism.
The plastic surgeon she hired will see to it that her surgery is not even noticeable; plastic surgery has developed to this level.
Lest I seem harsh, I do not wish cancer or suffering on anyone, but as you state - my sympathy for her is limited as well.
You are NOT cynical. This is seriously the main issue.
And the end point, is that innovation like this will be slowed, as more are forced into standardized plans.

My father died of colon cancer.... wouldn’t want to pre-emtively do without a colon, now would we?
I just got tested earlier, more often, and seriously am eating healthier, more veggies, etc. exercising regularly....
One has to have the time to learn about all of these cutting edge tests!
This kind of work that Angelina had done is like ‘concierge’ medicine. I wonder if ANY insurance covers that kind of test.
I paid out of pocket for some hormonal stuff, and was happy to have the ability and opportunity.
People have to think about doing what they HAVE to, and not just what their insurance covers.
I think that the whole medical ‘insurance’ concept has been perverted. I understand catastrophic insurance, but when it covers everything, people stop taking the same responsibility for their health. (lol, don’t get me started... family in the insurance business!)

Smart decision and I would do the same thing if my odds were as bad. I wish her the best.
My mother too, back around 1966 when cancer treatments were pretty drastic and implants weren't available yet. She had a major mastectomy with deep scarring.
I'm not certain when the cancer returned but I believe it was bone cancer that took her life in 1977 when she was only 51

Living with a voice box is different than living with breast reconstruction.
