How Mail 'printed' first plastic gun in UK using a 3D printer- and then took it on board Eurostar
The London Daily Mail ^ | May 11, 2013 | Simon Murphy and Russell Myers

The Mail On Sunday today exposes the massive international security risk posed by a gun that can be easily made with new 3D printers.

We built the weapon, which is capable of firing a live round, from blueprints available on the internet – then smuggled it on to a packed Eurostar train.

Two reporters passed completely unchallenged through strict airport-style security to carry the gun on to a London to Paris service in the weekend rush-hour, alongside hundreds of unsuspecting travellers.

The pistol, capable of firing a deadly 0.38-calibre bullet, was produced in under 36 hours using a revolutionary £1,700 machine to ‘print’ its components. And because all the parts are plastic, they did not trigger the metal detectors all Euro-star passengers must pass through.

Last night, the train operator began an urgent investigation into the security breach as experts called for airports and public buildings to review their procedures in light of our revelations.

The Mail on Sunday pieced together the 16-part pistol – called The Liberator by its creators – after downloading the designs. They were originally published by an American university student, who proved the design works by successfully firing a bullet on a shooting range....

Hate to tell them that you don’t need a 3D-printer to make these things. Anyone can do it with basic hand tools.

The government is always fighting the last war.

“capable of firing a ‘deadly’ .38 caliber bullet...”

Does anybody know of a bullet that’s not “deadly?”

Now much of a worry if it’s .38 caliber. Heck, what’s that a 1/10th of a millimeter?

But mockery aside, talk about a tempest in a teapot. Considering it has a metal firing pin, you just put up the gain on the detectors and viola.

The bit of trouble is that the IslamoNazis couldn’t build a transistor radio without Western technology.

But they can buy a 3D Printer, computer, and make one of these.

Sometimes “back to the stone age” seems like such a good idea.

The real “international risk” lies in governments afraid of armed citizens.

Why didn’t they try to take the plastic gun on board with bullets?

Isn’t it illegal to have a handgun in England? Why are these criminals not in custody then?

They’re going to have to segregate the airlines. Muslims restricted to certain flights only. Trouble is, they probably wouldn’t be able to get pilots to fly them. Not even Muslim pilots.

A "deadly" .38 caliber bullet. That's MUCH worse than a normal .38 caliber bullet.

I see the printer they used cost 1700 British Pounds. They get that down to a grand and I'm in for one. Not because I need more firearms. I don't. Because it pisses off all the right people.

.380 is about 9.6 mm. Halfway between a 9mm and a 10 mm. Nothing to scoff at.

But further to your point, it does not appear that any ammunition was brought with them. Sorta a false test.

.38 caliber - ain’t that about the size of a hypodermic needle?

But, that reality doesn't fit well with the narrative that this criminal administration wishes to push upon us. Five bucks and a 10 minute trip to Lowes would provide a plethora of improvised firearms. Remember: we need the gov't to protect us from ourselves. /s

I learned to make a gun at about 6 years old at the hands of a delinquent teenage uncle with fireworks, a hollow steel table leg, and the head of a big bolt that fit inside the table leg.

Kicking up detecter sensitivity enough to detect a metal firing pin would cause it to alarm on everybody’s zippers and metal buttons. And the firing pin could be ceramic.

The article said .38 caliber. That is a redundant statement in that caliber is by definition 1/100 of an inch. Hence a 45 caliber gun fires a projective of .45 inches. As such a .38 caliber gun is .0038 inches in bore.

I was mocking the Brits for their customary gun ignorance.

I am reasonably sure the liberator shoots something like a .38 special or 380 also known as 9mm kurz (both of which have a bore size right around .355 inches).
