Cardinal O’Malley to boycott Boston College commencement over honoring of pro-abortion Irish PM

May 10, 2013 (CNS) - Archdiocese of Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley said today that he plans to boycott Boston College's commencement ceremony May 20 because it will feature Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny as its commencement speaker. The College is scheduled to award Kenny an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Kenny supports loosening the country's legislation against abortion.

“Since the university has not withdrawn the invitation and because the Taoiseach (prime minister) has not seen fit to decline, I shall not attend the graduation,’’ O’Malley said in a statement released this afternoon. “It is my ardent hope that Boston College will work to redress the confusion, disappointment and harm caused by not adhering to the Bishops’ directives," he added, referencing the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops instruction that Catholic institutions not honor those whose views are inconsistent with the Church's teachings.

Who knows, maybe Boston College is planning a tribute to the Boston Marathon bombers as well...

Perverted is as Perverted does...

Contact info:

Boston College President Rev. William Leahy, S.J. at 617-552-3250, 617-552-8000, e-mail William.Leahy.1@bc.edu

Another contact email address is the Jesuit Province of New England:

Note that Father Leahy is a Jesuit and that BC is a Jesuit College.

What a shame.

BC was one of the few Catholic schools left (my daughter went there)that still knew it was a Catholic school. (So many of the other Catholic and Jesuit schools have become very secular.) They can have controversial speakers all they want in the furtherance of education, but not at graduation. Come’on; get a clue!

The problem with the situation is that Boston College invited the Irish PM before the abortion legislation was introduced.

However, Boston College should have kept track with what was going on in Ireland, and said that there was a technical problem (as a basis for cancelling the invitation).

Maybe BC should have looked into how good a Catholic the PM was before the invitation was given...

The only way to contact Pope Francis over this (the Pope is a Jesuit) would be to contact the Apostolic Annuncio.

Unless one could set up a private audience with the Pope.

It would be possible for any of the Bishops of the Dioceses of the United States to make a passionate plea to the Pope to intervene or at least comment on this (the Pope commenting on this would bring shame on BC).

Nonsense. Boston College hasn't been a Catholic school for a very, very long time.

Yet he endowed Teddy Kennedy with veritable “sainthood” at his funeral. What a hypocrite!

OK, I get it now.

Pro-abortion Kennedy = GOOD

Pro-abortion Kenny = BAD

If Pope Francis hears about the Boston College affair at a later date without having been informed, there will be hell to pay.

The Bishops of Ireland (apparently) contacted Cardinal O'Malley about this.

The Bishops of Ireland were incensed about what BC was going to do.

This is mentioned in the article.

When Ted Kennedy had his funeral, there was no outrage by American Bishops about Kennedy having a Catholic funeral.

Unless it is something else about Ted Kennedy besides his funeral that you are referring to...

The bottom line is that PM Kenny has upset the Bishops of Ireland. And Cardinal Sean O'Malley acknowledges their anger.
