Film showing tonight: Rebel Without a Cause
Libya Herald ^ | May 9, 2013 | Staff

The 1955 American classic about teenage alienation and rebellion, Rebel Without a Cause, will be shown at Tripoli’s Art House tonight.

Starring James Dean, who died before the film was released, and directed by Nicholas Wood, the film explores teenage feelings of alienation and disillusionment with society.

Tonight’s film-screening is organised by the Arete Cinema Club. Cinemas and theatres in Libya were closed for decades and the cinema club aims to reintroduce films to the community.

Rebel Without a Cause is in English with Arabic subtitles. The screening starts at 6 pm on Thursday 9 May, with refreshments are available beforehand. The Art House is on Al-Sekka Road in Tripoli.

James Dean was a queen alright.

For some reason I have a problem watching movies with fruits in them. Rock Hudson , Van Johnson, James Dean, it just kills the movie for me knowing their real preference.

I still wonder how Doris Day kissed dick-breath Rock Hudson.

“In Paris, gays do awful things to the tomb of Oscar Wilde.”

What for? Didn’t Wilde defend “the love that dare not speak its name”? Or maybe Wilde wasn’t gay to begin with and was simply indulging his well-known penchant for outrageous expression. His sons maintained that he was never homosexual.

Oscar Wilde converted to Catholicism on his deathbed and died in the peace of the Lord. That’s enough to upset the gays right there.

No, they try to portray him as the queen of queens - smearing the grave with lipstick and graffiti. Of course, Wilde was a VERY complex individual and not just some ridiculous gay icon. Buried in the same cemetery is Jim Morrison - one of the saddest, loneliest graves I’ve ever seen. No flowers, no grass in front - just discarded beer cans from American teenage tourists. Shudder.

"Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" is a 1946 song, with music and lyrics by Alex Kramer and Joan Whitney. It was recorded by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five. The single hit number one on the US Billboard R&B Juke Box chart and number six on the pop chart.[1] The B-side, "Let the Good Times Roll", peaked at number two on the R&B Juke Box chart."

I vaguely recall seeing part of this movie on TV quite a few years ago, so I do not know the reference to the expression in the movie. But I do know that there is a song from the 1930s or 1940s that has the refrain of something like “Nobody here but us chickens”. I’m sure it’s on YouTube. (Okay, now that song will be my earworm today.)

That is a pretty strong response to the simple post 5.

I never said anything about homosexuality, I just think that he was a drama queen and over acted, it is why so many people find themselves groaning or laughing at his acting.

“”Take a real look at “Giant,” to see a real (if very beautiful) man. Always Free Republic disappoints me with its complete lack of culture and knowledge of the arts...grr...””

Not liking the short lived, 23 year old movie actor James Dean should not call for that condemnation.

“”We have no idea where he would have gone as an actor”” Yeah, and I’m not losing sleep over it.

By the way, the internet references Dean saying that chicken line, I didn’t take it to the proof or find a video cut, but it sounds like it is accurate.

The initial RWAC was a completely different film with Marlon Brando playing the teen. The screen test that Brando did for it in 1947 is his first ever appearance on film. It’s fascinating.

No, it’s been a running theme for me that conservatives have allowed themselves to be chased from the arts and the result is that they know nothing about them. I think the bottom fell out for me about a year ago when freepers went bananas over a production of Kismet which they thought was an Islamic jihadist musical. To have so-called movie buffs claim that Rebel Without a Cause is - not only a black and white film - but a badly acted one as well, just sends me into a bit of a tizzy. There is a reason that 50 years after his death, Dean remains an icon of the American cinema. You guys need to educate yourselves or better yet, just not comment.

Oh, and to the freeper who thought Dean represented the feminization of American culture: Rebel is an indictment of the feminization of American culture. Jim Bachus doesn’t walk around in an apron for nothing.
