Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a newly elected Republican with a penchant for making headlines, filed an amendment that would bar undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States from ever earning citizenship.
There are an estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally, and a bipartisan immigration reform measure would create a pathway to citizenship over the course of 13 years by requiring those people to pay penalties and back taxes, as well as learn English. Conservatives opposed to reform decry the path as amnesty, but Democrats say they will not support reform that does not cope with the immigrants already living in the U.S.
Cruz also filed amendments that he says would "strengthen border security measures; reform the high-skilled temporary worker program; modernize, streamline and expand legal immigration; and prohibit federal, state or local entitlement benefits for those here illegally."(continued)

Ted Cruz looks a little bit like John Wayne. Unfortunately, Texas has been taken over by illegals. South Texas is a disaster.

If you’re allowing them to stay in America but not become citizens - this is a bad outcome. They should be deported. All of them.

Heh. For a quick addendum to Mary Katharine’s earlier post chronicling the continuing Senatorial drama with the indignant claims of procedural “bullying” that Majority Leader Harry Reid is leveling at Sen. Ted Cruz, you know Cruz wasn’t going to take that one lying down. Try if you will, but there’s just no denying that Sen. Reid has been coming off as irate and condescending while Cruz is cool, calm, collected, and — what’s that word again? — oh yeah, civil. The man impeccably lays out his case, and is it just me, or does it sound like this “very junior senator” has considerably more gravitas than his elder colleague? Via RCP:

He pushes everyone around and is losing. The first step in getting amnesty through is to first get illegals to be legal. Citizenship and official sanction to keep giving them all the benefits they’re already getting can—and would—come later.

I’m not sure that’s a good idea because I don’t like the idea of telling a criminal where to look and what to expect in the way of resistance if he attacks a military base or gets into a firefight.

14th Amendment
Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
The key phrase is "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" A child born to foreigner parents is subject to the jurisdiction of their parents' country(s), not of ours. Otherwise every ambassador's wife would be getting knocked up and delivering here.
Somewhere along the line we lost sight of that clause. We merely need to start enforcing it again.

I’d just as soon he not increase the numbers at this time. They may need to adjust the proportional numbers from varying countries but let’s assimilate what we have before increasing the influx. JMO.

It’s a sad state of affairs we live in when a lawmaker is controversial for saying that existing laws should be enforced.
Cruz’s position should be the norm, not the exception, and it’s good to know that we have at least one voice of reason on this issue in the Senate (now that other Tea Party would-be luminaries like Rubio and Paul have sold out on immigration reform).
If I had my way, the 28th amendment to the US Constitution would be a thorough rewrite of the 14th, to do just that. Unfortunately, we're mostly stuck with this loophole for now, and it's been the bane of demographics in the Southwest US ever since.

Put a $1 Million penalty for hiring an illegal, and like someone else said, this will take care of itself.
