One thing that struck me as I viewed the museum at Buchenwald was that the typical age of the guard at the camp was ~19. The Nazis purposely recruited young men from lower class groups into the SS guard ranks. Easy to warp their minds.

So long ago: hard to ascertain the truth so many years after the fact. If he really was just a cook, this is merely a vendetta and he should be let go. Members of the Jewish police and Jewish Kapos are never prosecuted, even though their forced collaboration led to many Jewish deaths. I don't think this guy was even German, rather a conscript from one of the conquered nations.
