CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Long-missing Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus have been found alive, a police source confirms.
WOIO Channel 19 had reported that a woman claiming to be Berry called police Monday afternoon and told a dispatcher that she was in a house on Seymour Avenue on the city's West Side. The woman said DeJesus was with her.
"We've confirmed it's them," a detective said. "They are alive and safe."
Berry, now 27, and DeJesus, 23, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. The FBI and police will interview the women when they are discharged, the detective said.
Police arrested the owner of the house, Ariel Castro, 52, who had lived in the house since 1992. Records show he was arrested for domestic violence in 1993, but a grand jury declined to indict him.
Neighbors on Seymour said a man was arrested and three women came out of the home.
Berry disappeared at about 7:40 p.m. April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday. She was last seen leaving her job at a Burger King at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue.
DeJesus, then 14, vanished April 2, 2004, while walking home from school in the same area. Since then, the two have been the subject of numerous vigils.
Outside of MetroHealth tonight, a growing crowd awaits word on the women's condition.
Berry’s cousin, Tasheena Mitchell, 26, who was 16 years old when Berry disappeared, said her brother had called to tell her the news that Berry is alive. But she said she received it skeptically, having had her hopes dashed by false reports in the past.
“She was my best friend,” Mitchell said.
A friend interrupted her, “She’s alive. She is your best friend.”
“You’re right,” Mitchell continued. “She is my best friend. I’m so nervous. I’m so excited. They won’t let me inside. But I will stay here all night if I have to.”
And in all those years they NEVER had a chance to call 911 until now? Not even once? I don’t know,,,I’m just getting more and more cynical. Sign of the times, I guess.
agree this is big news there but not national, we know they are free and the man is caught but to make this a massive story to the country which affects no one but the locals is more of an excuse by this drama queen media to keep Benghazi off the news because that does affect us knowing how a Govt turned their backs, then lied about it

It is. The age of consent in Mexico is 12 and that recently factored into a criminal case in the USA. I can’t remember the specific case but a Mexican man got away with molesting an underage girl because the judge applied Mexican law in the case. It was pretty sad.

it’s a happy ending story and now lets move on to more pressing issues instead of the usual angle of he’s the hero, he’s so brave, how could they do this, OMG this is terrible, it’s always the usual crap from the media.\\
Ask how one can do this, how can they function after this, can they live after this, can they have a normal life, how could someone do this, then it’s bring in the shrink time, then other s called experts.

weird how the media can use this and then carry this on but not cover a murderer where babies and a woman were killed, bit like Obama saying he does not comment on cases which are still open but is quick to talk about other cases like Zimmermann.

I moved from OH to FL 13 years ago. My cousin(who, by the way, is a Republican) was there on Sunday graduating from OSU. I’m sure she was not pleased with 0 being there.
ask you a question but every time I go out and drive about my state I always see a OH plate, we always joke that no one lives in OH anymore.
Question is why are so many leaving that state, is it really that bad or just people know someone and move here?

I feel will take a hit for this mess...they have not, maybe never has been well organized..really sad to say that...but when they make calls and never thoroughly check out a house says something is missing...but then again in that hood...who wants to go into those houses??? hard to call them a home...
