Five women died late Saturday when a limousine heading to a bridal shower burst into flames on the San Mateo Bridge, trapping the victims inside while the driver and four other women escaped.

The woman for whom the bridal shower was being thrown was among those killed, her sister said Sunday. She had recently married and had planned to return to her native Philippines for another ceremony next month.

------------------------------------------------

The dead women were all in their 30s and 40s, the CHP said. They included 31-year-old Neriza Fojas of Fresno, for whom the bridal shower was to be thrown at the Crowne Plaza Hotal in Foster City, said her sister, Rosalyn Bersamin.

Fojas, a registered nurse at the Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, was married recently in the United States, said her sister, who lives in Hawaii.

Let’s see if some FReepers can still find a way to inject humor into this.

I’m wondering if electric locks and windows didn’t allow them anyone to escape.

What a horrible way to go. I can’t figure how they got trapped unless panic and pushing buttons locking doors. How do you set it on fire? Cigarettes and alcohol?

A terribly sad thing.

Sometimes we never know when we go out the door if we will return.

We should live our lives to the fullest every day, and we must pray for the family’s of these women for these women are now in God’s hands.

Stretch limo don't have windows that open in the passenger area and only one door. I think this picture is typical of many.

Perhaps some hairspray, perfume, etc., got ignited by lighting a cigarette, etc.

Was the limo a real car or one of those latest fad new electric toys?

That’s more of a party bus, this was a traditional stretch limousine, a Lincoln Town Car.

That is the reason my car has no power windows. Yes I need to roll down the window with my hand but I rather do that then have an electrical meltdown. Also my door has a child proof lock but it is manual. I refuse to locked in a electrical box which could lock me in. Now we want so many gadgets in our car the only thing left for it to do is drive itself.

If I recall I believe a Prime Minister of Taiwan was locked in and he could not get out nor roll down the window or anything. He tried several hours to signal people to help him but many thought he was waving at them.

My car is a 2007 Toyota Corolla (basic) the only thing fancy in it is a CD Player lol. Otherwise I’m happy in it as long it gets me to Point A to B and back.

From my understanding this limo had only 1 door in the back. No emergency exit or nothing. I think Limo being long should be treated like buses - have an additional exit for emergency.

Yeah I can handle a crank window a mechanical locks just fine.

I learned my lesson years ago when I got a car with power windows. We were sitting in the dark shooting the breeze and I had the windows open a crack. I got my hand out just enough to flick a cigarette and it flipped up in the air and landed in the palm of my hand and a couldn’t get rid of it.
