Inside the far-Right stronghold where Hungarian Jews fear for the future
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | 7:00PM BST 04 May 2013 | Colin Freeman, Tiszavasvári

Posted on 05/05/2013 3:09:36 AM PDT by MuttTheHoople

As the self-declared "capital" of the ultra-nationalist Jobbik Party, the town of Tiszavasvári prides itself on being a showcase for how the whole of Hungary might one day look.

Since winning control of Tiszavasvári's local council three years ago on a pledge to fight "Gipsy crime", the party has been on a vigorous clean-up campaign, banning prostitution, tidying the streets, and keeping a watchful eye on the shabby Roma districts at the edge of town. It even swore in its own Jobbik "security force" to work alongside the police, only for the uniformed militia, which drew comparisons with Hitler's brown-shirts, to be banned by Hungary's national government.

Why they call these neo-Nazis "far right" is beyond me. The Nazis were Socialists who used Nationalism to whip up the masses and blamed the Jews for all problems. The Communists were Socialists who used "Social Justice" to whip up their masses and blamed The Kulaks, Batista, George W. Bush, etc. for all THEIR problems.

Hopefully, this time the Jews in Hungary have Israel as their protector, and if the Jobbiks want to try to re-enact World War II, Israeli commandos will go all "Inglorious Basterds" on them.

Because it sheds a bad light on the right in the US.

Jews in this country, and I assume in Hungary, are highly disproportionately represented as supporters and especially leaders in leftist groups.

Given this fact, there is more or less by definition going to be some spillover of criticism and hostility from group A to group B.

That is unfortunate, but if nearly all redheads were vocal supporters of right-wing causes, one would expect supporters of left-wing causes to develop some generalized dislike of redheads.

The continental European right isn’t about conservatism and never has been.

Good point. The most successful attempt on Hitler’s life came from a group of Conservative Catholic Army officers and politicians.

Socialists can be “far right” in a country where every politician is some kind of socialist.

Exactly. Like the struggle between the communists and national socialists in 1930s Germany.

The far left Israeli PR expert who wanted to hit the settlers also worked for Jobbik.

Nasty stuff. Even the ADL woke up at that one.

It goes back to Stalin’s propaganda about Hitler and Nazism.

Where's the concern about Communists, who in practice are indistinguishable from Nazis. Calling people Nazis is simply a way to smear mainstream non-liberals. See the comment about Jobbik voters having similar concerns to your UKIP voter. If the newspaper were American, they say Tea Party voter.

So, when the liberal/left wing calls everyone, who disagrees with them "racists", it devalues they term, set the label as just name-calling and actually opens the way for real racism. The liberal/left media always ignores the racism in this country, which comes from the political left and minority groups; blacks and hispanics.

Unfortunately, in Europe in general the attitude toward the Jewish people is not like that here in the USA. Hungary is one of the places where antisemitism runs deepest. Hungarians, partly I'm sure for self preservation to avoid the fate of the Poles, were allied with the Germans in WWII. The attitude towards the Roma (Gypsies) is deeply ingrained as well. And to be honest the Gypsies keep separate and their community does have a reputation for thievery.

These are all things which existed before WWII and won't go away. European nationalism has a dark side which the Left tries mightily to identify the American Right with as well. But except for scattered groups like the Aryan Brotherhood and KKK (aka the militant arm of the pre-1970's Democratic Party) which any Conservative or Libertarian would completely disavow and despise, the shoe does not fit.

It would be great if Jews in this country could learn a thing or two about the end game with regard to gun control...but they will not.

Blaming crime on a class, check; using tax dollars to fund a uniformed paramilitary, check; doesn't like Jews, check; all that's missing is Obamacare.

I am in entire agreement that American conservatism has little to nothing in common with European rightism, which is normally based on church-and-crown and/or blood-and-soil, neither of which have any real parallel here. (I have little familiarity with the Hungarian political spectrum.)

In fact, I would content that American conservatism is based on conserving the most radical doctrine in history, that people should be left alone as much as possible to run their own lives as they see fit. This is VERY different from European or any other variety of conservatism.

lol

you have had too much Mogen David

Communism in Hungary was Jewish getback time for many (except Zionists)

they suffered immensely before and during panzerfaust..and the brief Arrow Cross govt

but they paid back their foes when the communists took power..when they had the chance

this is not Inglorious Basterds...which was a pure fantasy btw

Europe is reacting with extreme tiny pop ups here and there of ultra nationalism

any hint of nationalism will be fairly or unfairly labeled as Neo Nazi or Facist

kind of like here...language borders and culture....the progressives think we are nazis and racists too

and Jews...most of them anyhow...will be on the left

this stuff just never changes

despite the best intentions of Hollywood directors
