Then again, one of the most devoutly Buddhist countries is Thailand. Always smiling (and usually picking their noses up to the third joint) but they are the absolutely the wrong people to mess with. The Burmese must have a similar personality.

hardliner Buddhist monks - now theres a phrase I never expected to see. It is not their buddhism, I think, about which they are "hardline." It is survival. They have modern communications and can see what is happening to the West. Once upon a time 1500 or so ago Buddhism went through a hard proselyting phase, especially in China so it is in their heritage to be activist, even if not in their tenets.
