AP) Utah NBC affiliate pulls gory 'Hannibal' TV show By BRADY McCOMBS Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY A Mormon church-owned NBC affiliate in Utah has pulled the "Hannibal" TV show because of its graphic violence.

KSL-TV vice president of marketing Tami Ostmark says the show's first three episodes were "extremely gory" and drew complaints from many viewers. She says it wasn't the type of show the station wanted leading into its 10 p.m. news cast.

Utah residents still will be able to watch the show: The ABC affiliate is picking it up and will air it late Saturday.

This isn't the first time KSL-TV has opted not to air a popular NBC show. In the fall of 2012, the station announced it wouldn't air "The New Normal," a sitcom about a gay couple who invites a surrogate mother into their home.

The station is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I’ve seen it, it’s awful.

Take away the gore and all that’s left is soul deadening sadism.

hum?
I always thought local stations had control over their content.
If the community doesn’t want to watch this really strange and bloody show, the station shouldn’t show it.
It is not relevant that the station is owned by lds, its called community standards. (ok, I am stretching that statute still exists)

To see what all the fuss was about, I just watched the first 4 minutes of the first episode on hulu.

It contained the gore you'd find in an R-rated movie. I cannot fathom how this trash ended up on television.

They own the station.

They are entitled to show or not show whatever they want.

I wouldn’t expect to see Hannibal, the Walking Dead, or The new Normal on EWTN either! :-)

Yeah. Local stations used to do this all the time, back in the 50s/60s/70s. If some network show garnered low ratings and/or loads of disapproval from their local viewing community, the stations would just replace it, running instead some ‘syndicated’ item of their own choosing. They used to do this at the drop of a hat. And, they’d very usually succeed in reaping better ratings. Sometimes even better revenue, with local commercial sponsors footing more advertising time.

I was always impressed when they did this, as it showed a certain backbone, and that they weren’t cowtowing to either the propagandizing or the pushing of lower moral standards from outsider Hollywood slimeballs. Haven’t seen as much of this kind of independence/backbone from stations in recent decades, though.

Hannibal
The Walking Dead
The New Normal
or

Just the commercials for "Hannibal" turn my stomach.

I have found myself saying on a regular basis: "Well, there is another show I have no intention to watch."

I just watched the first episode, and the amount of gore (blood but also quick flashes of open torsos during autopsies) nudity (a girl is shown totally naked with nothing but clever camera angles to marginally prevent viewers from seeing absolutely everything) and sadism is beyond shocking. How this got on non-cable TV, before 10PM no less(!) shows how far TV has fallen. Whatever happened to shows like “The Rifleman?”

Maybe I'm just getting old, but it was a better place when we still had this.

I disagree. The acting is superb. Vastly better than “Criminal Minds.” Yes, it portrays sadistic serial killers. Such people exist.

I watched it on KSL. Their 10pm newscast just lost a viewer.

It’s gory, but I think a well done show. Nice psychological thriller. Has to be a type of show a person likes though or it would be a bit much.

...and I just read Playboy for the articles; and Penthouse for the Advisor column.
