Students with non-legal U.S. immigration status would receive in-state tuition and be eligible for financial aid at Minnesota public colleges and universities under a bill passed Wednesday, May 1, by the state Senate.

"Today the Minnesota Senate is making history by recognizing that all students in Minnesota have access to higher education and state financial aid. The future is better for all of us in Minnesota when we have more professionals and we are able to compete with the world," said Mariano Espinoza, an outreach worker for the city of Minneapolis, after the vote.

Announcement of the Senate vote at a May Day march and rally for immigration reform in front of the Capitol drew cheers and chants of "Si, se puede!" (Yes, we can!)

The bill passed 41-23, with support mostly from Democrats and four Republicans. Two Democrats voted no.

Democratic-Farmer-Labor Gov. Mark Dayton supports the measure -- referred to as "the Minnesota Dream Act"

More welfare for colleges. Great.

So, I have to ask: If “non-legal residents” are eligible for financial aid from the universities, isn’t this crowding out participation for the people who are here legally? After all, there is only so much money to go around. Also, will these “non-legals” be given an advantage over white “legals” because of their minority status?

I resent that my tax dollars are going to pay for this.

Rather than adding to federal and state deficits or increasing taxes, any spending bills ought to be funded by the lawmakers who vote for them.

I do, too. We are well on our way right now, and certain to be much further down the road in the next 2 years because the people elected majorities in the House and Senate to go along with the Dem. Govenor.

My husband and I seriously consider leaving at least once a week.

The Democrat-led Minnesota legislature, and the moronic Gov. Dayton (who keeps his riches in tax-free South Dakota), are doing their best to ruin that state. They’re raising taxes as fast as they can. Glad I don’t live there.

Can’t these laws be fought in the courts based simply on the fact illegals cannot acquire benefits over legal citizens, or is this strictly a 10th amendment issue? Does the 1982 Plyler v. Doe SC decision play a part?
