Time to Buy a Dishwasher and Boy Have They Changed! EPA ruins dishwasher tech
4.28.13 | chickensoup

It is time for a dishwasher. My last dishwasher was replaced three times by the manufacturer before I ripped it out and started handwashing. time to go back to dishwashers and I cannot find a timed dishwasher, just ones that are ENERGY EFFIEICENT with sensors.

The biggest problem I had with the newer untimed dishwashers is that I would have to rinse the dishes instead of scraping them.

the second problem is that because I did not rinse them, they ran for six to eight hours becaus there was debris that the sensors picked up.

Lousy design.

I am looking for a good dishwasher, that can actually be effective and clean the dishes now that the EPA doesnt permit us to have phosphates. Or timed washes.

Any war stories? Most of the dishwasher reviews out there aree actually paid ad reviews placed by an agent of the manufacturer.

Forget consomer reports.

Go to Lowes, buy a box a TSP and put a spoonful in every load. Tri-sodium phosphate. It's a wonderful thing.

I looked into that but the TSP in my hardware store states: Contains no phosphates on the label.

While you're at it, how about that other thing that housewives have to deal with, which is cleaning the family toilet? Do you know how hard it is to keep a toilet clean these days?

Rather than deal with these low flush toilets, I have taken to using the shower nozzle to reach over and get them clean. Sometimes I like to stand there, rinsing the toilet with what amounts to a lawn hose, for several minutes wasting as much water as I can, cursing Al Gore...here we are, I have to get a hose to clean my flush toilet...

I just installed a ~38 yr old Kitchen Aid Imperial that had been run for ~2 yrs as a roll around and then sat in the basement for 35 years.

It work GREAT! and only takes ~50 mimutes to run. Solid steel too.

I have a Bosch washer, BTW, which I am reasonably satisfied with.

I am a 48 single male and never owned a dishwasher. I did have one once when I rented an apt yea it was nice but that was years ago. It takes no time to clean my dishes by hand and its actually fun as I listen to Mark Levin while doing it. So actually I enjoy doing my own dishes, not a problem here. Its just part of life.

I recycle all my water; it comes from a well on one side of my property and goes into a septic tank on the other side of my property.

Four of the largest bodies of fresh water on the surface of the earth lap up on the shores of my state.

Why do I have to use water-conserving appliances?

If you go to GFS, Dierks or other restaurant/institution supply store, the Inst. Calgon has phosphates. As far as the dishwasher itself, check Canada or see if you can find a low end commercial version.

They’ve done the same thing with washers for laundry. Specifically, they’ve changed the agitator configuration on the low power consumption models so its barely there - saves power but doesn’t wash worth crap.

be careful TSP can etch glass. I’ve found that you need less than a tsp. along with Cascade for heavy duty work. Finish from Sam’s works well.

We, too, have a Bosch with no complaints after 8 years.

the answer is obvious ... all of your problems stemmed from not washing the dishes before using the dishwasher.

Go to your local re-use center or Craig’s List and try to snag an older working model. A few more years of reliable service is better than shelling out for high-tech trash. Repeat as needed.
