Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Scott Brown joined John McCain in denouncing the congresswoman's Muslim witch hunt
Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising star in the party and a potential vice-presidential pick for Mitt Romney, said this morning that he disagreed with Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann’s baseless call to investigate Muslim Brotherhood infiltration in the U.S. government.
Appearing on NPR’s Diane Rehm show, Rubio was asked by a caller if he would join Republican Sen. John McCain’s strong condemnation of the anti-Muslim witch hunt on the Senate floor yesterday. While Rubio said he doesn’t personally know Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton whom Bachmann accused of being connected to the Brotherhood, the Florida Republican said, “Wveryone I talk to who has dealt with her, [says she is] a professional and hardworking and patriotic American who loves her country and in the service of her country is serving it.”
“I am not a signatory to that letter,” Rubio said of Bachmann’s letters to the inspectors general of several national security agencies demanding investigations. “I don’t share the feelings that are in that letter. Obviously, every member of Congress has a right to express their opinion and every member of Congress is held accountable for their opinion, if they’re right or if they’re wrong.”
“I can tell you that I don’t share the feelings that are in that letter,” he continued, “And in fact, I’m very very careful and cautious about ever making accusations like that about anyone.”
Rubio’s comments are decidedly more circumspect than McCain’s, but it is still unusual for someone in his position to speak out publicly against someone in his own party. Bachmann has also earned scorn from her former presidential campaign manager, Ed Rollins, who said Bachmann’s witch hunt is “extreme and dishonest.” “Shame on you, Michele!” Rollins wrote.
UPDATE: Sen. Scott Brown, the Republican from Massachusetts facing off against Democrat Elizabeth Warren in November, took to Twitter to strongly condemn Bachmann by name:

But comparing Senator Rubio to a collection of Latino Socialists is ridiculous. Rubio's strong suit is his ability to defend the free market system, the dynamic power of an unfettered Capitalist system.
Instead of insulting the Senator, people should simply apprise him of why it is not appropriate for one, himself a beneficiary of our letting his family come here to enjoy that free market, to be advocating the interests of the people he left, over that of those who took him in. And that’s the same excuse I’ve heard about Grover Norquist, Rubio’s adviser and mentor. WHAT , what has either done to help ‘capitalism’? It’s a trojan horse, William. A bone to throw us to keep you in their camp and keep you quiet. Don’t ya think we did that long enough??

Uh, those comments were not condemning Bachmann. He said he wasn’t a signatory and did not share her views. That is a far cry from condemnation.

That is right, I went there.
Yes. You 'preach to the choir.' While I am not against any friendly people, I oppose any infiltration by any foreign culture that alters the basic social characteristics of any American community. The settler peoples who founded modern America sought congenial communities for their posterity. I will always respect that purpose.
But one can tell Senator Rubio that he is wrong on this without insulting him. He is also very right on some other big issues.

Rubio took the safe path. He didn't condemn Bachmann, just reported he hadn't heard anything bad about Hillary's aide and that Bachmann would have to face the consequences of her views like any politician. Big deal.

Actually....the story that Rubio told seems to be falling apart as well. I’m not sure what to make of it yet.

The problem is that naturalization papers and other official documents examined by the Post showed that Rubio’s parents actually came to American in 1956, more than 2.5 years before Castro took power. In the story, Rubio is quoted as saying his account is based on “the oral history of my family,” and his office says the family had hoped to return to Cuba and returned several times to assess the situation.
In a statement following the story, Rubio offered something of a non-denial denial, stating that “[t]o suggest my family’s story is embellished for political gain is outrageous” while not exactly denying the embellishments. He said his claims have always been based on his “parents’ recollection of events.”
“The dates I have given regarding my family’s history have always been based on my parents’ recollections of events that occurred over 55 years ago and which were relayed to me by them more than two decades after they happened,” he said. “I was not made aware of the exact dates until very recently.”

For the few uninitiated, here's an example of the difference between straight news and opinion. Even from Salon, a pretentious refuge for snooty white liberal semi-urban hipsters - and who pretend this is straight news even if it was intended for their own demographic - inserting the word "baseless," without quotes or attribution, would even get it flagged on Wikipedia.
First, the infiltration of the Muslim Brotherhood in not "baseless," it is well documented.
Claims of guilt by association are no less valid than if there were hundreds of government employees scattered in sensitive positions throughout the federal establishment who were (or used to be) Nazis.
There is no essential difference, and only fools believe differently.
Second, even a reader from Mars would wonder - did Rubio say it was baseless or was just the reporter's opinion?

He said he was not a signatory on the letter BACHMANN & other congressmen wrote about the Muslim infiltration and said he DOES NOT SHARE her views.
It wasn't any kind of condemnation.
That's just Salon trying to stir up disagreement and rancor among conservatives.

As for keeping me "quiet?" Just how is the frank dialogue that I propose with Rubio in Whither American Conservatism?, keeping quiet?
I not only oppose any continuation of our idiotic post 1965 immigration policies, I have pointed out repeatedly (for example, Surrender By Subterfuge, how the diversity cult, which is a major part of our present immigration policy, works to undermine the continued existence of the Republic.
Grover Norquist also has some good points, but he is also clearly out of line in this. It is short-sighted, very ineptly focused, pseudo-pragmatism, that must be strenuously opposed.

Look it up, Salon isn’t the only source of this. There is no doubt he disagreed with Bachmann. He has in the past condemned Radical Islamists, so why didn’t he just keep quiet about it??? Perhaps because Bachmann is one of the FEW who will speak up against AMNESTY???
Many people here are doing EXACTLY what Rubio, McCain and Norquist want, picking the messenger to pieces and ignoring the MESSAGE.
