Gay Therapy Ban Proposed in New York

A ban on gay therapy in New York has been proposed in a bill introduced on Friday, modeled after the 2012 California law that first banned the service.

The bill seeks to ban licensed therapists from helping minors change their sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual.

"There are often challenges to any manner of legislation that is protecting of the LGBT community and you can't sit on your hands and wait until things get resolved somewhere else," said Sen. Deborah Glick, a New York Democrat who proposed the bill alongside fellow Democrat Sen. Michael Gianaris.

Gay therapy remains a controversial issue, with gay rights supporters saying that it harms youths by telling them there is something wrong with who they are, and conservative family groups saying that it offers legitimate help to those hoping to change.

Glick told The Huffington Post that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths make up 40 percent of the homeless population in America, and they are often kicked out of their homes by parents who want them to change their orientation.

"You start to hear the same stories over and over again," Glick said. "'They tried to make me straight and they took me to ...,' or, 'I couldn't become – and so they threw me out.'"

The senator continued, "The rate of suicide, the level of depression, the kind of bullying in school that is focused on homophobic epithets, even when students clearly are not gay. So there's clearly an issue about being more supportive toward gay youth. And then you have folks who have made a business out of this alleged ability to make gay people straight."

When California passed its own law banning gay therapy back in September, a number of conservative groups sued the state, including Liberty Counsel on behalf of the National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality.

"The California governor and legislature are putting their own preconceived notions and political ideology ahead of children and their rights to get access to counseling that meets their needs," Liberty Counsel said in a statement.

"This law undermines parental rights. Mental health decisions should be left to the patient, the parents, and the counselors – not to the government to license one viewpoint."

Really? In spite of all the propaganda, in spite of the ‘overwhelming’ support for homo marriage among young people, homosoxuals are still getting bullied? Perhaps its just in our nature to have a strong dislike of this crap?

I feel people with mutliple personality disorder are being unfairly discriminated against, being forced by bigoted parents to seek help for the misunderstood identity in which one person is actually several different people. Its time to stop this therapy and accept people with psychological disorders as normal.

I don’t think Gay Therapy works any better than acupuncture but why ban it unless you have an agenda?

I have a real problem believing that statistic.

Just like the muzzies - thoughts of encountering the real and living God terrify them, they know they are under His judgment.

I love how the left can just throw out stats and make up crap like this. Is Glick using the billion homeless figure from when Reagan was President, or the 300,000 or so now with Obama.

Note also the subtle dig at families - its the parents who are kicking the children out. Having some firsthand experience with family members who have been drawn towards a sinful lifestyle, the parents are sometimes the only lifeline, and the only way to victory. I've seen too many kids saved by the love and faith of their parents.

That is pure bullhockey.

Uh, we have a little convention here on FR of posting a "/sarcasm off" or "/sarc" or even "/s" after a sarcasm, for your own protection to keep from getting flamed.

Glick told The Huffington Post that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths make up 40 percent of the homeless population in America ...

Glick made that number up out of the air, knowing an ideologically sympathetic audience wouldn't question it. She would have said 90%, if she'd thought she would get away with it ... but too many people actually see "homeless" people in real life.

In many countries, parents aren’t allowed to teach their own religion to their children.

“Its time to stop this therapy and accept people with psychological disorders as normal.”

I know that this was sarcasm, but look around, I think that it’s actually the plan; destroy the normal so the abnormal becomes the status quo.

Importantly, all they can do is ban “licensed” therapists. So if a religious organization does it as a religious practice, I would think it is still legal. Kind of on the same level as an exorcism.

Amusingly, I might add, because they could subtly let it be known that homosexuality “is just a bit” like demonic possession. Which would drive the homo lobby frothing starkers.

(I’ll add the story of a lay street preacher who had been annoyed by some atheist Goth kids who were in the habit of pestering him and were getting increasingly bold. So one evening, he got a bottle labeled Holy Water, and said a loud prayer over it asking that it expel the demons from these youths.

Then he asked them, as a group, if any of them wanted to expel the demons within them, and, of course, one of the bolder ones volunteered, hoping to mock him. Well, the street preacher gave the boy a good ounce of the water on his face and chest, as the Goth tried to pretend to be demonic and liking it.

But then, after a few seconds, suddenly the Goth yelled out, for real, “Ow! Hey! It burns! Aiiiieee!”, and took off running into the night, screaming. This really took the wind out of the other ones sails, and they soon departed.

The preacher’s comment, after the fact: “Yessir, there is nothing quite like Holy Water, with a little capsicum in it, for expelling demons!”)

Listening to the media and watching shows like Glee, you’d think 40 percent of the entire population is gay.

You’re correct.
If a space alien watched US television, he’s assume the demographic to be 30% black, 30% Hispanic, and 30% gay.
