Congressman To DHS: You’re Going Through 1,000 More Rounds Per Person Than The Army
Freedom Outpost ^ | Apr. 26, 2013 | Dean Garrison

Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah-3rd District) had serious questions for DHS representatives on Thursday. Fox News reports:

Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000 rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army, as he and other lawmakers sharply questioned DHS officials on their “massive” bullet buys.

“It is entirely … inexplicable why the Department of Homeland Security needs so much ammunition,” Chaffetz, R-Utah, said at a hearing.

The hearing itself was unusual, as questions about the department’s ammunition purchases until recently had bubbled largely under the radar — on blogs and in the occasional news article. But as the Department of Homeland Security found itself publicly defending the purchases, lawmakers gradually showed more interest in the issue.

Chaffetz’ questions were about waste and accountability. He was able to structure a solid line of questioning based upon the fact that DHS is requiring 1000 more rounds per agent than the United States Army requires for one of its soldiers:

Chaffetz, who chairs one of the House oversight subcommittees holding the hearing Thursday, revealed that the department currently has more than 260 million rounds in stock. He said the department bought more than 103 million rounds in 2012 and used 116 million that same year — among roughly 70,000 agents.

Comparing that with the small-arms purchases procured by the U.S. Army, he said the DHS is churning through between 1,300 and 1,600 rounds per officer, while the U.S. Army goes through roughly 350 rounds per soldier.

He noted that is “roughly 1,000 rounds more per person.”

“Their officers use what seems to be an exorbitant amount of ammunition,” he said.

And they are buying the EXPENSIVE stuff too! (Hollow points for PRACTICE????)

We used wad-cutters EVERY SINGLE TIME when I was in the Security Police in the Air Force. NEVER used hollow points.

Sales. They must keep their inventory built up. Jihadis and drug cartels need boolets.

The people and the government are both arming up in preparation for an armed conflict between the two.

That would be my guess, or they are preparing for martial law, which, I suppose, is about the same.

Do a physical inventory. Bet they don’t have them.

I've been bartering with local, state and federal law enforcement for their excess ammunition for years.

It's "free" to them and they think it's theirs.

Am I wrong for taking advantage? Probably. Do I regret it? No.

The question that always arises when I read things like this is: “And what are we going to do about it?”

DHS has the same amount of ammo as would have kept US forces in Iraq shooting for 28 years. They have the same personnel strength as the USMC and TWICE their budget.

“We should have it JUST IN CASE” —same thing small towns said when they all went and got SWAT teams with fancy ninjya kook gear.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

We all know, and our dogs know, too.

Does the admin have to answer ANY questions from the Legislature, or not?

**WHY** DO WE HAVE A LEGISLATURE? As things currently stand this is unclear to me.

I have a feeling that the Army ammunition usage cited is across literally every single member of the US army (only a small fraction of which are small-arms toting infantrymen) so it’s distorted by tens of thousands of REMFs, aviation guys, tankers, and other specialists who do very, very little small arms practice.

And I have a feeling the percentages of non-field types are not that much different for the DHS.

Ding. Ding. Ding. the winner.

I agree that some “brilliant” leftist figured they could just buy up all the ammo. They didn’t anticipate the power of the free market to just increase supply.

Either that, or another theory: When the economy collapses, they will restrict the Internet, and confiscate bank accounts, resulting in mass riots, which is when they will shoot everyone. Just sayin’...

“Agree it’s a monster but Bush didn’t see it coming.”

I want to believe you on this. It’s hard to imagine someone like Bush intentionally creating something so counterproductive to American freedom and American culture.

You seem to know/understand more about this than anyone I’ve come across.

Would you explain why a Homeland Security was deemed necessary when we already have the FBI, CIA, NSA, State Police, Local Police, Sheriff, Coast Guard, ATF, and probably even more such agencies? If a DHS really is necessary to protect our homeland, why was it not around prior to the early 1990’s?

This is a treacherous time for patriots. The government will be all too happy if it succeeds in catalyzing large-scale demonstrations. Historically leftists have used situations like that to their benefit by putting in provocateurs and then tarring the whole group with the actions of the fake conservatives. We saw a lot of that during the tea party rallies during the first Obama administration. This time they will have huge stores of ammo and so their provocateurs can commit acts of violence and destruction of property that will dwarf the Occupy movement’s bad acts.

The DHS is quickly becoming Obama’s personal civilian army. This is unconstitutional and is a hellish direct threat to our liberty. The DHS is harassing innocent American citizens rather than concentrating on huge numbers of the Islamofacist enemy that are daily infiltrating into our country.

The DHS claims that the president does not have to enforce our immigration laws and in fact can pick and choose which laws he wishes to support.

And the DHS has published directives that constitution defending white Christian PATRIOT veterans are more of a threat to America than Islamic terrorism.

And the president, VP, and AG all go along with all this idiocy and also want to unconstitutionally disarm us patriots and deprive us of our first amendment rights.

This is treasonous madness!!

Close this rogue agency down immediately!!

Impeach Obama, Biden, Napolitano and Holder and run them out of Dodge!!

"Except three of five homes happen to be the followers of Muhammad, and immigrated here from the middle east."

Those house will never be searched. Now a hosue with a 'Tea Party' flag would be searched and its residence brought in for questioning.

Some of us questioned Go expansion via DHS under GWB.

You hand that kind of power to a megalomaniac like Obama and you got trouble.

Funny that the people on the left that saw Bush as out of control, now fawn all over Obama even as he has expanded surveillance of citizens 4 fold.
