After Sandy - New York is still recovering from the devastating storm.

Five months after Superstorm Sandy hit New York, most of the city is back to normal. The power is back on, and Governor Andrew Cuomo has wrung more than $30 billion in disaster aid from Washington. But the coastal neighborhoods that bore the brunt of the wind and the water have yet to recover.

Ruin remains on the Rockaways peninsula in Queens, where the historic art deco bathhouse at Jacob Riis Park is surrounded not by pedestrians enjoying the view but by the autumn’s debris—branches, broken glass, and sheared-off brickwork. Along the beach, mechanical claws clutch at the waste that was once a house; nearby, the broken remains of another house await a buyer.

Across the bridge in Broad Channel, Queens, the destroyed Bayview Restaurant is a testament to the peril that comes with a Jamaica Bay view. And more than 23 miles away, Staten Islanders must decide whether to rebuild and stay—or abandon their beachfront homes to the wild.

No, no, no, this can’t be. Obama is president. Everything is just hunky-dory, right?

Christie french kissed Obama and he thought he would take care of NJ and NY. Perhaps Cuomo needs to get some kneepads.

Frankly, this is tragic. These are middle class neighborhoods that didn’t vote for Emperor Barry.

This is the difference between leftist FEMA-dependent hellholes and places like... Texas.

Pass a city ordnance that says “clean up your property or we do it for you; you have 30 days” and people will either get in gear or get clean-slabbed.

Instead it’s “woe is me, no FEMA help”.

Stupid. Just stupid.

Yeah, geeze, I don’t know.

Have much history in the area. Auntie has to have her house rebuilt (uncle is making it happen). They’re old school - he’s not that into the FEMA give away and he had flood insurance along with the rest.

She’s textbook. Cath Univ. 1954 MA in ed. LI BER AL. Catholic (claims to be). Thinks abortion is ok. Reads and believes the NYT.

Checking in, says she cannot believe “they” saw people and gave money to Katrina vics so quickly but not in NJ, those republicans favor other people so much more.

And I stutter. How to fight back to a virtually homeless woman when she brings up politics.

But I still stutter. So, when I see these photos, after watching that horribly huge European sized storm via satellite photo and sending boxes of candles matches and batteries, I see these photos - and Christie making out with BO! UGH.
All I can muster up right now is cry me a river as their hero does worse damage to law abiding citizens he despises so obvously

Going to recant a bit.
Looking again, I see this is SI. They got so schwacked. May deaths. and that horrible Bloomberg trying to get a marathon going FROM Staten Island while people were lying dead.

And Staten Island IS a conservative (NY standards) area that did not go big for BO (they were actually red in 2008) and it is very political BO makes it that way as does Bloomberg and OH Cuomo horrible.

If these places were in an area with a future they would have been fixed already; the fact is that they are in dying states (NY, NJ) and there is simply no money to fix them. In viable areas businesses would have kicked in to restore things to normal; what are area businesses here going to throw in? Their debts accumulated over the last 10 years as business stagnated?

Everyone one is waiting around hoping obama is going to pay for everything.

Why spend your own when someone else will pay? It changes self-reliant people into beggars.

But, but, but, it can’t be. Sandy was just another overrated rainstorm.

Plenty of FReepers even said so.

They wouldn’t have LIED now, would they?

That so much damage remains says more about New Yorkers and their politicians than it does about the severity of the storm.

That so much damage exists says more about the severity of the storm than many people were willing to admit.

There were plenty of FReepers who said the storm was overrated, blown out of proportion, not as bad as images showed.

It was disgusting to see the *they got what they deserved for electing liberal politicians* mentality.
