That's a rather large purchase for someone on public assistance, eh?

It makes you wonder as to the source(s) of his funding.

So, now fireworks = black powder???
Wasn’t there something just in the news the other day about seeking a ban on black powder? Awful convenient...

Did the MSM publish the name of the store where the first perp purchased the item, thereby creating an advertisement for all terrorist on where they can purchase supplies?

Maine’s GOP TEA party governor, Paul LePage, pushed through legislation in 2011 which OK’d the open sale and possession of fireworks in Maine. Cities and towns can ban them if they want to, and some cities and towns have done just that (unfortunately).

Meanwhile, one company has spent millions of dollars opening fireworks stores throughout Maine.

On a recent trip from one Maine county to another, I noticed two fireworks stores. On my previous trip a month earlier, those two stores were not there, so they’re spreading.

Now we can look forward to the libs (trying) to ban the sale and possession of fireworks nationwide. They’ll blame the actions of the two jihadi brothers (a Boston talk show calls the older brother “speedbump,” and the younger brother “flashbang”). The lefties hate liberty and freedom, the flag and the Fourth of July, so it would be par for the course for these libs to try to ban fireworks.

He bought 200 dollars worth and it was not used in the bombs. about 2 and a half pounds total, which is not much.

The bombs used high speed military grade explosive which was obvious from the damage done as well as the lack of black powder residual on the components found. The amount of smoke was way less than you would expect, the blast fireball should have been yellow, not white (too high a temperature). The removal of limbs was due to a high speed shockwave rather than shrapnel. None of it fits black powder.

Not at all sure what explosive was used. We may never find out which is fine by me. I think the press provides entirely too much information on these types of attacks and they should just shut up.

There was lots of smoke initially, which made think it was gunpowder, not at all a military style explosive. Also one picture showed a large orange fireball, again a sign of a pyrogenic explosive, like gunpowder. If an 81mm antipersonnel mortar round had gone off in that crowded there would have been scores of people killed. Any a cellphone or pocket camera would only have captured a complete blurr.

I’m not a pyrotechnian, and will gladly defer to anyone with better knowledge, but that was my immediate impression.

This was not your usual ‘fireworks display’ set.

This was a MORTAR CANNON. I have used them on several Independence Day Celebrations. The kit contains a plastic based cardboard tube and tennis ball sized ‘rounds’ with a long fuse. You can also buy extra ‘rounds’.

I wondered why these things had an EXTREMELY long fuse, until I lit the first one , stepped back about 10 feet, and watched it launch. I couldn’t hear for several minutes.

It occurs to me that not only may they have used these as the ‘improvised hand grenades’ that they threw at police, but (since they bought $4000 worth), just used the others in the bombs, as they were. No need to tear them open to get the explosive mixture out. Already have fuses. Most of the work is done. Just load them into a pressure cooker surrounded by nails and shotgun pellets. One or two ‘rounds’ would certainly do the job.

Link this to the reports of a nearby town having problems with someone shooting off some kind of ‘fireworks’ in the month prior to the bombing.

All speculation at this point.

My first guess was TATP but they could have hit multiple fireworks stores and tried to keep their purchases under the radar.

BATF/FBI will eventually issue a statement on what was used. It probably will point to the fireworks as a source even if it was high grade C4.

Hmmm. Thank-you for that link.

Boston talk radio guy Howie Carr was wondering if the jihadi brothers had EBT cards.

Fireworks? Bull $hit!
Like the guy from the fireworks company said, there ain't enough powder in $200.00 worth of fireworks to make bombs.

For $200, he could have bought up to 10 pounds of black powder from any retailer that caters to black powder shooters or hunters. For God's sake, for $200, he could have bought 10 pounds of smokeless powder.
Were the bomber brothers and their accomplices that stupid?
Or does the government and their lackeys in the media really think we are that stupid?
Probably the latter.

CORRECTION:
I meant to say, since they bought $200 worth. Someone else said $4000 worth and I repeated it, even though I had heard elsewhere it was $200.

Great. So now they’ll want to make fireworks illegal. I mean, it had to be the black powder that made them do it right? It couldn’t have been because they were radical Moslem fanatics who wanted to kill Americans, right?

What about tannerite (sp)? This has been in the news recently here in Indiana. Seems to be pretty potent and readily available here.

Like the guy from the fireworks company said, there ain't enough powder in $200.00 worth of fireworks to make bombs.

Well... he and you are completely wrong. Here's why.

Hold a firecracker in the open palm of your hand and fire it off. You will have a very sore hand, but you'll be ok.

NOW, light one and hold it tightly in a closed fist. Let me know how many fingers you have left.

The amount of gunpowder in that firecracker, were it not tightly wound into a compressed roll of paper, wouldn't have enough energy to bother a fly.

Whatever 'explosive' these guys used, It was detonated while contained in a PRESSURE COOKER.

Have you ever fired off one of these MORTAR CANNONS ? I have.

Two or three of these in a pressure cooker with some nails and bb's.....would make one heck of a large explosion.

Just one of them going off (not even the 'display' explosion', merely the 'launch' part) taught me to run VERY FAR and VERY FAST after lighting it.

My guess was tatp too. It was a very fast explosive that burns clean. The lack of residue in the recovered components points to a high speed explosive. It was not black powder but something much more powerful.

Probably made a powder mix and used the powder from the fireworks like a large primer to touch off the other powder and increase the burn rate making for a more powerful explosion.

A lot of handloaders have accidently created little bombs by mixing two different powders of different burn rates.
