Ireland’s cash-strapped borrowers face ban on vacations, limits on food spending

Irish borrowers struggling to meet their loan repayments may be banned from taking vacations and face limits on how much they can spend on food under guidelines published by the country’s personal insolvency service.

Monthly individual living expenses for people seeking debt relief may be capped at 35.73 euros ($46.7) for clothing, 247.04 euros for food and 33.40 euros for personal-hygiene items, the Insolvency Service of Ireland said in Dublin today. Households in towns with “adequate public transport links” may not need a car, while private health insurance may also be banned, the ISI said.

The guidelines set a “standard of living that is based on needs, not wants, but it is more than survival and allows for meaningful participation in society,” the ISI said. “It should not be regarded as a standard of living for people in poverty.”

I spend more than $411 on food and incidentals for one person each month so I think this figure is terribly low and punitive.

All those that refinanced their homes, then walked away when they were upside down on them.

Those on here dumping on all these people should consider what would happen if their job disappeared.

We're talking about those that have money for a vacation, but not to make their house payment. Most of us are anyway, from what I've read.

You are in inspiration, caww.

A lot like what people were like in the old days and what the younger generation just doesn’t get.

I spend that on the family, not just one person. I don’t see how that’s so terribly low or punitive. Yes, the pantry and freezer are full and no, I don’t use coupons or have a Costco here. Haven’t bought clothes in ages and don’t eat out much. Why eat out when we can relax at home and for much less.

We all wonder why King Obama never gets the blame for the Economy. It’s very easy, unlike the Jimmy Carter days, most people aren’t suffering.

Let me amend that, responsible people are suffering, but the Obama crowd is anything but responsible. In the past, people took Public Assistance (the dole) as a last resort, and like it or not there was a sense of shame in accepting it.

Today we have a large portion of our Population that thinks they are owed a Living, and they don’t care who pays the Freight. The hate the Evil Rich, but they would not survive without a Government that commits financial rape against those same Evil Rich to buy the Votes of the supposedly abused masses.

As for me, I live by the Golden Rule as told to me by my Father when I was a whining 13 year old who was “forced’ to work at his Gas Station to earn an allowance, “Nobody owes you a living, so shut up and get back to work”.

Ping me when indentured servitude and slavery are re-instituted.

Pull your property tax bill, then look in the mirror.     Ping!

What happens when the global bankers manipulate markets? They create chaos, people lose jobs, lose their savings, lose their homes, and so forth.

Meanwhile the bankers get a big bonus and funnel some more money to govt drones to hide their crimes.

Cutting back even severely only works so far. There is no replacement for having a job and income.

Face it, there are two classes. Those of us subject to the whims and crimes of the upper class. And those who can ignore laws, steal, lie, cheat and then close their bank for the day go home and party with $10,000 champagne.

“who goes on vacation when you are behind on loan payments in the first place?”

Immature and selfish people that do not have the ability to prioritize like adults. You know, people like our President and RINO’s in congress....

Those who excuse that they need the relief from the stress, or want to take a vacation before they have NO money, or justify it as a way to reward themselves for staying in a job they do not like.

I constantly hear about people going on vacation whom I know are receiving Medicaid, have debt, have several pets, including horses and are supposedly debilitated from a chronic infection. One brought a stray dog back from Mexico that has been in a University vet ICU for months. They will likely end up not paying for the dog’s treatment, either.

I was flat out told that I could get assistance if I didn’t have assets in a CU account that could be tracked. The implication was that we should hide cash assets in order to receive benefits.

Basically, I hear people encouraging each other to work the system while telling themselves “I deserve this.”

Reformed liberal,

You surely don’t expect people who don’t have any religious opinions, people who don’t believe in God, to not take advantage of free stuff do you? In order to get the free stuff they have to hide any assets they have. I understand that mentality. I have seen people whoop and holler, jump up and down with joy when they get to their car after purchasing something from a store and find the store made a mistake in their favor. It is the same.

Only a moral people can handle freedom.

The Republic, The United States of America used to be a moral, religious people, we now sadly are not.

I personally believe that The Evil One has gone after the family because the destruction of the family, family values, will take with it morality. He has been right on and is winning.

Anytime you see any ordinance, law, statute or any regulation you should think about what affect it will have on family. If it is bad for family then it is bad.

Many churches are pro gay marriage. Gay marriage is evil, is destroys family values. If any pastor comes out in favor of gay marriage, or in favor of single motherhood I know they are influenced by The Evil One. I am not saying they are evil but they are listening to the wrong voices. Abandon those pastors like you would poison.

I will restate what I said, morality will only be found with religious people. Religious people will only be found in families. Yes there are exceptions but by and large the above is true.

Same here.

I wish my dad had a gas station that I could have worked at 13. I had to push a lawn mower if I wanted any money.

I had my own "lawn care" business 46yrs ago.
