LOS ANGELES | Tue Apr 23, 2013 9:38pm EDT

(Reuters) - The city of Los Angeles will pay $4.2 million to a mother and daughter who were caught in a hail of bullets in February when police mistook their truck for one driven by renegade ex-policeman Christopher Dorner and opened fire, officials said on Tuesday.

The settlement, which allows both sides to avoid a trial, brings the Los Angeles Police Department nearer to closing what had been an embarrassing chapter in its search for Dorner. The department still is reviewing the actions of two officers.

"The LAPD Police Union should PAY; out of the Members' Dues, IMHO."

No sh*t! But the Police Department should also pay. This was an atrocity in the making. Two old ladies shot at because the idiot "civil servants" couldn't tell the difference between cars? Really? They should have gotten more and taught those trigger-happy cops a lesson. I'd like to see what the Chief of Police has to say about this.

“Dorner’s gray Nissan Titan truck, and officials have said the officers opened fire after mistaking the blue Toyota Tacoma “ whatsa problem?

Imports all look the same in dim lighting conditions.

"47 is hardly considered 'old'."

So okay for the cops to open major fire on them, anyway?

There is just NO excuse for the cops peppering their car when it didn't even resemble Dorner's vehicle. They are lucky they are alive.

just because they were in car that vaguely resembled the suspect auto.

"Dorner's gray Nissan Titan truck, and officials have said the officers opened fire after mistaking the blue Toyota Tacoma "

the only VAGUE thing was that it was a truck -

Other than that, it was pretty damn BLUE to be mistaken for gray - not to mention the different make and model - or that it was two women, not one black man -

TOTALLY indefensible - They should NEVER be allowed to carry a gun again.

Given that LA’s finest emptied numerous magazines to stop a pair of women who BORE NO RESEMBLANCE to the suspect, the city got off cheap at 4.something million.

I’m no lawyer - I work for a living. (And I’m too honest)

How good are you at differentiating makes, models and colors of similar vehicles under poor lighting conditions? Look at the back window of the truck in daylight. It is shaded to the point you can't make out anything in the cab. Where was the sun at the time of the shooting?

Unless you're being sarcastic, they were not only two different types of vehicles that even I could discern in "dim lighting", but all police cars have spotlights and they could see there were to older women in the vehicle (think long hair versus short Dorner hair). There is no excuse and that's why LA paid the money up front. Those cops simply screwed up. They should be kicked off the force and lucky to get a job at McD's.

There’s NO personal responsibility for Negligence in these cases (or ANY cases where “Public Employees” are found guilty of wrong-doing). The Taxpayer pays Millions for the errors/over-action/malfeasance of Public Officials, ALWAYS, and Lawyers are on the scent in nanoseconds, because it’s another income stream from the Public Trough. MAKE THE GUILTY PAY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS, and see how quickly the trigger-happy road-guards clean up their act.

You're assuming they were functional and used, aren't you? You're doing exactly what you are accusing the cops of doing.

Anyone who looks at the photo you provided, while thinking may be some mistake in identification, should realize that cops should not do what they did to that car and occupants without having better info.

They screwed up and anyone who wants to defend the LAPD once again for their trigger-happy behavior is beyond me. Two women delivering papers in a vaguely similar colored truck gets pounded with that much fire-power with NO warning? Sheesh. Really? There's an excuse for that?

Are you claiming a victim has no recourse in civil court?

"What a dumbass question. Are you brain damaged?"

Yup. I'm daim-branaged cause I can't see why those idiots cops shot those "middle-aged" (how's that? happy?) full of wholes without having ANY knowledge of who was inside that truck? Did they forget they have spotlights? Bet they didn't, and shined that spot on those (2) ladies throwing papers out their truck and still shot the hell out of their vehicle because the entire LE community was ready to kill Dorner, as he should have been, but screwed up here.

You're making excuses when none exist just because you want to be right. Some people, even cops, screw up. Get over it.

Everyone calm down! I think pretty much everyone is on the same page with this one. The ladies deserved compensation for the totally moronic acts of the police and it’s unfortunate that the citizenry must pay instead of the police or their union. That about sums it up.

You're making excuses

Why do facts and accuracy scare you so much? Neither of us were present or know under what conditions this event occurred. You didn't even know that one victim was 47 years old and was not shot.
