Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) is retiring rather than seek re-election in 2014, according to two senior Democratic strategists familiar with his plans. First elected in 1978, Baucus has been the top Democrat on the powerful committee since 2001. The likely Democratic candidate to succeed him would be former governor Brian Schweitzer, sources said.

He voted the right way on gun control, which sealed his fate among the Dems, O & Bloomberg.

I like the way he has signaled to the GOP that they get their candidate lined up.

I think he got a midnight call from Imam Obama telling him the party would not support his reelection. If he shifts his vote when the gun bills come back up, which they will, you know he got the message to change his vote or be picnicking at Fort Marcy Park.

Cheney is from Wyoming. I thought I read somewhere that Liz Cheney was contemplating running for office there.

That makes six democrat senators retiring and ten freshmen up for reelection, not to mention Chambliss and Johannes retiring on the repulican side. If we play our cards right, the senate in 2015 could be a VERY conservative body!

Western Montana is a cesspool of liberals. Butte (pronounced “butt” by any other Montana that does not live there) experienced communist riots in the early 20s since most of the miners were from the east coast and Europe. The rest of Montana is inhabited by rock-solid sons of liberty.

“Geez! Talk about “needed to retire 35 years ago”...

Poster child for the term limit argument, in my opinion. There are way too many people who go with the intention to “serve” their constituents, but after many years of participating in the D.C. culture end up serving only themselves.

It was his advocacy and vote for Obamacare that was going to doom him...that’s why he’s bailing..

Beating Bacus in 2008 was a “huge opportunity”. Beating Tester in 2012 was a “huge opportunity”. Picking up the Kent Conrad seat was a “huge opportunity”.

The GOP as a national force is dead, and the situation in Montana and the Dakotas proves it.

One of the chief architects of Obamacare. He doesn’t want to be around for the train wreck.

Ted Turner, hardly a Californian, has massive property holdings in Montana.....California is just the first of once great Conservative states to be turned into socialist hell holes by emigration from the east coast....note that in addition to those states lefties comes their version of Republicans.....(read RINOs)

I smell a pick up here!!!

There was the aroma of senate seat pickups all over the 2012 election. Turned out to be the stench of GOP candidates pooping all over themselves and losing seats that we should have won. I'll wait until we see who the candidates are.

Good point. The Dems have a younger man in the wings who will hold the seat for another 20 years.
