Parents Need to Demand that Congress Enact Gun Reform

The news has sucked this week. From the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, to poison ricin discovered in the President's mail, and the explosion of a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, has any stretch of five days better epitomized life in post 9/11 America? Fear, violence, explosions, and chemicals. As I write this, my Twitter feed buzzes in the background; the city of Boston remains on lockdown as police engage the surviving suspect of the bombing.

Yet as Dennis Lehane wrote in an Op-Ed in The New York Times on Tuesday, we'll recover from acts of terror like the marathon bombing, our spirits intact. To me, the worst news in this week of bad news was the seemingly soulless failure of U.S. Congress to act on what could have been a preventive measure against acts of domestic terrorism, by failing to pass legislation controlling and limiting the sale of firearms.

On Wednesday, a bill sponsored by Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (of West Virginia) and Republican Senator Pat Toomey (of Pennsylvania) which would have required background checks for gun purchases online and through private sales failed to pass the Senate with the required 60 votes. The bill would also have banned military-style assault rifles. While critics have said these measures would do little to impact the threat of violence in schools, the bill saw overwhelming support by the American public, and would have at least been a step toward more comprehensive gun reform.

I’m waiting for the first Democratic pol to suggest that murders committed with guns be made a federal crime as well, with a mandatory death penalty attached.

Yes, parents... press hard for gun control, because guns are the cause of all ills in America. If guns were forevermore out of the hands of ordinary citizens and only in the hands of the police and military, the country would overflow with boundless happiness and peace. To wit:

1. Gun control would’ve prevented the bombings in Boston.
2. Gun control would’ve prevented those ricin-laced letters.
3. Gun control would’ve stopped Kermit Gosnell from murdering untold numbers of full-term infants.
4. Gun control would bring Kim Jong-il to heel.
5. Gun control would’ve stopped the attacks on 9/11.
6. Gun control would’ve stopped the shoe bomber.
7. Gun control has been so effective in making Chicago the utopian, peaceful little island of stability that it is.

We should start, for instance, be repealing the 1986 restrictions on the ownership of automatic weapons.

Amen to that!

Mr Lucky is the recipient of the April 2013 Second Amendment I get it award.

I’m quite sure Mr Lucky would follow the first repeal with the 1934 travesty that took away the right of Gangsters to use automatic weapons to shoot one another on St Valentines day. A real American tragedy.

That would be a good first step toward common-sense gun laws. We should do it for the children. If it saves even one life, it's worth it!

They haven’t let off gun control for one fraking minute! This is why the next election will be a slaughterhouse for liberal politicians. They just do not learn. They live in a giant circle jerk throwing out 90% numbers thinking yahoo, we finally have enough blood to bath in to destroy our enemies!

Unbeknownst to them, the mountain of pissed off Americans that brought about the sea change in 94 has re awoken and we are filled with a terrible resolve.

This parent teaches kids how to handle a gun.

And - looking back to days at the grandparents house (on a farm) that had a “pantry-O-guns”, never locked...with multitudinous (love that word) children around...and never a shooting incident.

Why? We actually were taught well.

Unlike liberal children.

So, standard phrase, “Shove it up your smelly Obama, liberals.”

Yeah. After all, the 1934 law was so effective in reducing gang violence. In 1930, when machine guns were legal, the homicide rate in Chicago was 14.6 per 100,000 population; by 2000, with machine guns illegal, the rate had dropped to 22.1 per 100,00 population.

Thank you I was hoping some smart individual was going to find the statistic that put Chicago on the list in post 30.

Tied with Dominica it seems.

We DO need gun control reform. Don’t laugh... I’m serious.

The NFA of ‘34, the GCA of ‘68, and the FOPA of ‘86 all need to be repealed. All State laws against the simple act of owning or carrying of any “arm” must be repealed. Any and all taxing and licensing schemes must be repealed, particularly where it doesn’t allow said tax to be paid or does not apply to those who are incarcerated for some other crime or currently remanded to an mental health institution.

Once that is all done, then we can talk about real crime control and putting protections in place for those who use their armaments against real criminals.

I demand gun reform! I demand that every non-felon citizen be issued one semi-automatic shoulder fired weapon (OK, OK- assault rifle, even though it ain’t one) and one personal defense weapon, pistol or shotgun, along with a starter supply of ammunition if they choose to accept. Felons who have served their terms and are free may purchase their own.

If they choose to purchase additional weapons, up to and including attack aircraft and tanks, that’s their business!

Unfortunately, the "real criminals" are the current regime.

Ahhh, so the NRA was right after all. This was only the camel’s nose under the tent. They had a lot more planned after this.
