Susan Sarandon: ‘War on Drugs’ Is ‘Completely Racist’ April 22, 2013 By Melanie Hunter

(CNSNews.com) – Actress Susan Sarandon on Wednesday called the war on drugs “completely racist,” arguing that only lower level drug defendants get locked up – “mostly people of color.”

“The war on drugs is ridiculous, because you’re only getting—you’re spending a huge amount of money. It’s completely racist. You’re picking up everybody at the lower level because mandatory minimum drug laws let you trade in to get off, so if you don’t have anyone to trade in, if you’re at the bottom, you’re going to jail," she said.

“If you’re up at the top, you just trade in somebody and then you get off, so the people at the bottom are the ones that are filling up our jails, mostly people of color. And you’re wasting taxpayers’ money, and you’re allowing drug cartels to make money,” she added.

Sarandon advocated for the legalization of marijuana, saying “I would like to see everybody be able to smoke pot.”

Sarandon added that it would produce revenue for states. “If you taxed it, we’ll see what happens in these states that have passed it. You would have a lot of income,” she said.

Personally, I am tired of the Federal Gov’t protecting other people from their bad choices. It applies to everything from drugs to welfare. The greatest irony is that the more our Gov’t tries to “help,” the worse the problem becomes.

Perhaps it is time for the cost of lack of personal responsibility to increase greatly.

I am absolutely against drugs, and my kids know and understand it 100%. I have never relied on Uncle Sam to do my work as a parent.

i wish she and others would use the word, “racist,” correctly... what she is referring to as being racist, is not racist... what she is referring to as racist is actually “racial.” i wish i could set her straight...

I am happy to hear that she is alive still, at her age.

Susan doesn’t have to live in the drug/crime infested neighborhoods. It’s easy to have such lofty, enlightened opinions from the safety of Malibu, Beverly Hills, or some other gated, patrolled community in CA.

generally because the white kids are buyers, not dealers. they have a very small amount just for them, the dealers are dealing and have larger amounts.

a dealer is worse than a user. the dealer doesn’t give a sh1t about the people they sell that crap to. if it is detroying that person’s life or not. coke and meth and crack will eff up your life big time. that leads them into crime too, to keep their habit.

It was “black community leaders” that called for the criminalization of crack cocaine 20+ years ago, because they wanted the dealer locked up and kept away from the community. Perhaps Susan ought to remember that.

Exactly. The racial impacts are profound, even if not intended to be racial in effect or motivated by racial animus.

Indeed, a thoughtful conservative can and should point out the extent to which many social disparities which liberals like to say result from racism are just as likely to be the result of the way that the War on Drugs falls on poor minority communities. It renders a huge portion of the population ineligible for well-paid labor. It creates an installed base of organized crime which commits (or allows to flourish) all variety of other vices and predations. It absorbs the attention of law enforcement that would create safer neighborhoods if it could focus on violent crime.

The thing that confuses me the most is how very, very few African American or Latino politicians have taken this up as an issue in any kind of sensible fashion. Half of them are full-throated, unabashed drug warriors. The other half seem to be in support of some kind half-assed kinder and gentler war on drugs, where drug dealers and users would be just as criminal and just as high a priority of law enforcement, but if caught would get much more lenient sentences -- in other words the one "solution" to the drug war that would end up with more criminals on the street, not fewer.

Don Giuseppe “Joe Z” Zaluchi, head of Detroit’s Zaluchi family in the first Godfather had a quote about that...I think. Maybe not.

I hear you on the dealer/user point but there are a lot white kids who are “dealers” in pot and, admitted, less hard core drugs, in their suburban communities who aren’t getting the book thrown at them. I know a couple of them in my area. As I said, I don’t buy knee-jerk racism accusations, but I still think there is some truth to the idea that the poor and blacks are treated worse.

"She doesn't even understand how you “trade” somebody in. You don't trade somebody below you. The LEOs will only accept a trade UP."

You got it. Cops work their way up the ladder not down the ladder. Depending on how much he knows, the guy at the bottom has the most leverage when flipping.

"only lower level drug defendants get locked up"

If so, Susan has had brief, transient moment of lucidity. It's her first.

The upper level should be locked up, and the providers should be locked up for a long time.

the drug being dealt is a factor too. but this is also common sense.

it’s not racism, it’s what’s being dealt, in what quantities does someone have, are they set up/to deal’ baggies, etc. the fact blacks are into more addictive, dangerous drugs is not racist, it’s fact. it’s what they are caught with. prior record also can affect it. if they had a background like a white kid and were dealing a lesser drug they’d be getting a different sentence. that’s not racist, that’s their choices.

don’t buy into this pc bullcrap. it’s like saying blacks can’t help having abortions because planed parenthood sets up shop in their urban areas.

My dad would try to find racism in anything.

*in the supermarket*

“Now son just look at these cocoa puffs. Now you ask yourself why must I be coocoo for the cocoa puffs? The white man think I’m crazy? The white cereal frosted flakes are grrreat but the cocoa puffs make you coocoo! And why is the brown rice called wild rice? Just because it’s brown? And why are the black olives in a can? The green olives in a nice jar, but the black olives is in a can! Ask yourself why do they lock the black olives up? See what the white man tell you? You coocoo, you too wild, and you gotta be locked up!!”

We didn’t watch sports when I was growing up because ‘the black people don’t watch sports’ but my dad did let us watch bowling. He liked the symbolism of that big black ball crashing toward those ten white pins. And all the pins had red necks.. - Some black comedian who’s name I can’t remember.

She’s right - it’s discrimination against the entire race of drugs. See? I could get a job in Hollywood.
