SHANGHAI (Reuters) - - In order to compete in the fast-growing SUV market in China, Jeep wants to produce a vehicle in the No. 1 global auto market by the end of 2014, Jeep's top executive said on Saturday at the Shanghai auto show.
The "obvious choice" for a Jeep product to be made in China is the Cherokee, which was recently introduced in Jeep's primary U.S. market and will be on sale in the fourth quarter in China, said Mike Manley, CEO of the Jeep brand of the Chrysler Group.
Manley said the Cherokee is the best choice to be made in China because that size SUV market is growing quickly and also that the model is fresh in its life cycle.
Manley said the Cherokee would easily be able to be made at the new plant owned by the 50/50 joint venture between Fiat SpA and Chrysler and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co in Changsha, capital of the Hunan province.
Manley in January at the Detroit auto show revealed that the company would work with GAC to produce a Jeep in China for the local market.
But first, the joint venture must be expanded to include Jeep in addition to Fiat and Chrysler as owners of the non-Chinese half of it.

Manley said there are no plans to produce a Jeep model exclusively for China market, which in 2009 overtook the United States as the largest auto market in the world.
China is Jeep's second-biggest market, behind the United States.

Jeeps made in China will not affect plans for production at the Toledo, Ohio plant where the Cherokee is made now, Chrysler officials have said.

I did the same thing LOL And I drive it here in Hollywood. Whenever I see a Prius, I give em’ a smirk, especially when I’m in the studios..
This just means a Chinese producer will be able to exactly replicate the jeep design and give that technology to other Chinese manufacturing concerns. China insists on having full blueprints, software, and other technology specifications for all manufacturing done within its borders. The are pwning us right now like we did to the British at the turn of the 20th Century. Our free-trading politicians and business leaders are stupid and don’t know our economic history.

They aren't stupid. They know EXACTLY what they are doing. They want to break the American Middle-class. They want to loot and lord over us like the Red Chinese Communist Party bosses loot and lord over the Chinese wage-slaves.
Most company executives are just interested in getting what they can out of their shares. If, when they leave, companies are absolutely trashed, they honestly don’t care.
That’s the price companies are paying when they stopped promoting people from the bottom and hired from outside the company.
Well there is that possibility too...

And I read that their ball joints are junk.
Prev. had a cherokee. They cheaped out on valve cover gaskets and used silicone. One day all the oil leaked out, fried the seals.
Never buy a Jeep product.

After a fine ‘77 Grand Cherokee LTD, a great ‘94 Grand Cherokee LTD (V8) and still driving a pristine 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo, I’ll be moving to Ford when I’m ready to buy a new SUV. None of these POS for me.
Are they building a model in China or moving all production there? Romney said they were moving production.
