DeMint on Immigration: “Incomprehensible, Comprehensive Bills” Not the Solution
Heritage ^ | April 20, 2013 at 9:00 am | T. Elliot Gaiser

Both the process and the content of the current immigration bill violate America’s core principles and legacy of immigration, according to Heritage President Jim DeMint.

“This whole process is not really American, to take a few people and go behind closed doors and then come out and suddenly have it on the floor of the Senate for debate,” said DeMint on “The Mike Huckabee Show” earlier this week. (Listen here)

“Instead of incomprehensible, comprehensive bills that are thousands of pages, we need to take a step-by-step approach so people know what we’re doing, and with immigration, the obvious priority is to fix the system that’s broken,” he told Brad Jackson and Ben Domenech on the “Coffee and Markets” podcast.

“We don’t have a citizenship problem. We have an immigration system problem,” he said.

DeMint said the bill will impose massive costs on the Medicare, Social Security, and welfare systems. “There is a significant cost to taxpayers for those who come here illegally,” he said. “In other words, they take more than they pay into the system.

In addition, the bill will sap opportunity from those who have applied to come to the United States legally. “We’ve got 4 million people who want to come to America, have applied to come here, who can’t come here lawfully,” he said.

“Immigration is a very important part of our heritage, and we need to protect those things that immigrants from all over the world come to America for, and that’s freedom and opportunity,” said DeMint.

A bill 800 pages long with over 400 waivers and expemptions for the illegal aliens in it.

You know, I'm just sitting here wondering when the last time it was that Congress honestly put forth a bill that would elevate or improve life for the American people.

For the life of me, I can't think of a thing they've advanced in the last ten years that does anything for the people they represent. Seems that every single bill enlarges the government behemoth, rewards some select constituency, creates more restrictions and onerous barriers to liberty, or enables flat out treason to the Constitution.

It's hard not to conclude that the job of Congress has become the destruction of America.

The Wash DC establishment pretty much exists to feed itself.
Massive legislation requires armies of bureaucrats and attorneys to generate it, interpret it, and enforce it.

I agree. The “media” toads are portraying “immigration reform” as a life and death situation for the American people. I still don’t know why any American would be out there worrying about “immigration reform”. The only people pushing this are the buffoons on Capitol Hill. And we all know why they want this bill passed. Money! BIG money! $$$

They're not. The American people aren't clamoring for Washington to "do something" about the plight of the "poor illegals". All of the noise about this issue is coming from the traitors and sell-outs on Capitol Hill, their underlings in the state run media, and pro-illegal covens like La Raza.

The American people have consistently said in poll, after poll, after endless poll, that they want the immigration laws enforced, and for the illegals to go home.

But what the hell does our opinion matter? We just pay all the bills to support these egregious transgressions against us.

I know where they can send all those rounds purchased by DHS and other “protection” agencies...

Exactly. We are not enforcing the laws we have. Also, the Feds do not want the laws enforced and have gone after states who have tried to enforce the laws.
