TECH PING! Cell Phone Receiving Little Tiny Squares Instead of Letter and Words..
4.20.13 | chickensoup

Posted on 04/20/2013 3:48:50 PM PDT by Chickensoup

I have an ENV3 cell phone. I love it as antiquated as it is. However I find I can no longer send picutres to my friends with smartphones and they sometimes cannot send me texts. Sometimes their texts come through as letter trains of squares.

Is this normal between phones as the technology improves or do I need a new ENV3?

I really like the level of tech I have with my current phone.

I really like to text the kids.

I like to occasionally like to send a picture out.

And nothing beats this technology for actually being able to hear a conversation and hold a battery charge.

So techies? Is it a broken phone or is it that chickensoup is being left way behind in the technology upgrades and verizon wants me to upgrade by not letting me communicate with my friends. Not that I am paranoid or anything...

Look up your model phone and try to reset it. You will probably lose your contacts and pics, though.

Well, first test it. What are they sending you, and what phones does it show on correctly.

You may simply need to add a new charachterset to the phone. Perhaps they are sending moticons.

It could also be acommunication problem between different cell carriers.

Ordinary text should send between any phone just fine - the Envy 3 (I had the 1 and 2) should work just fine.

Hey, Chick. If someone texts you from a “smart phone” and adds a graphic emoticon, i.e. a real smiley face instead of :), all the text will appear as symbols.

Simple fix: Put your cellphone in your microwave, set for 10 minutes.... then get out of the room... maybe you should should leave the house.

When you return, I absolutely guarantee that you will never again have a problem with that phone.

Sorry.... I have an iPhone 4s and have never had an issue. If it were me, I’d call my service provider. Perhaps it’s as simple as a quick download to update.

Good luck.

“Square” used to be slang for cigarettes so someone is sending you virtual ones.

I never saw the point of “phone envy”. my little flip phone was fine, but my husband begged me to upgrade, so, I got the next best thing, a slider with a nice querty keyboard.

I wanted the phone to ring and I would answer it, just like the old days. I was happy with what I had.

Then it happened. The little squares, the lost texts, the laughing and pointing.

So I relented and got the most recent iPhone at the time an iPhone 4S.

Give it up Chickensoup. No matter the brand go hi tech, all of your problems will be solved and you will be so happy.

I now understand phone envy. LOL!

I had an ENV original, my daughter has it now. It still runs fine. I tried to give her a new phone but she wants that ENV.
These things do wear out, you know. If removing the battery and rebooting it doesn’t help, it may be shot.

Those symbols are called “Arabic.”

You must have found Obama’s personal cellphone.

Just explain to the problem to the person that sent you the text (ie. CALL THEM). Ask them what they did.

- Most likely: They have an emoticon font and they added a cute smiley face.

Then have them experiment a bit to see what text messages they can send you that you can read.

Don’t just do a blind search.

Yup, but if your phone was expecting chineese (because at some point the phone reset the language,) it might show squares when presented with english characters.

Just a stab in the dark.

It's almost certainly a character set and/or font display problem. Earlier posters made some good suggestions.

You might also investigate whether the phone has support for the "UTF-8" character set that allows Oriental and other non-ASCII characters. Without UTF-8 support enabled, if someone else's phone is sending in UTF-8, you'll probably get those little squares.

UTF-8 support is becoming pretty universal -- over half the Web uses it now.

See post 29....

The same thing happend to me when my one of my daughters sent me a “smart” phone text with a smiley face. All I got was a bunch of symbols, and a phone call from her, inquiring why I had not responded.
