Folks, if you want to survive the end of the world, you gots to be able to make bullets. There’s only one way to make the real, tactical bullets instead of those gooshy lead bullets that will melt coming out of your AR-15 or blow up your Glocks! Here’s the secret: the Hydro-Press for only $8950.00.

Hurry, before they’re all bought out by the leaders after the end of the world. You don’t wanna die!!!!

;-)

Sorry, Squantos. Couldn’t resist. And no, I have nothing against swaging, having set up and done similar runs and other kinds of machine work in the past. I’d recommend that interested folks go for more flexible machines for custom jobs of all kinds, though. A good and much more versatile hydraulic press can be had for less. Manual presses for custom work for far less. Fads do end, while some less exciting items will be desperately needed (e.g., parts for heavy equipment and light transportation).

That can be a great way to make bullets, for anyone who can cut a very consistent ogive from one bullet to the next. Some custom match bullet shops have done really well with those. I haven't had time to look into solving that problem (extremely consistent ogive on a lathe) but will try to get around to it.

You've gotta like swaging. ;-) IIRC, Corbin's press for near $700 or so is not a bad deal at all. I've thought about swaging a time or two but opted so far to restrict my bullet making to larger bores (cooked lead alloys with gas checks added for rifles)

Bullet head’s the part of the bullet that gets shot down the barrel (from “msm guide to bullets, clips and scary parts)

Do you ever feel like you're from an alien race of people from a culture that is a hundred million years more advanced than the one on this planet? Thank you, liberals! You have erased all cause for me to ever doubt my intellectual abilities. Apparently I did poorly in high school because I couldn't decipher the primitive grunting that passes for language on your world.

Thanks! I'd almost forgotten about that. It would be a good way to get the bullet diameter up enough to fill the grooves. I do cast hard pistol bullets a little over-sized but hadn't thought about checking actual bore sizes in medium or large bore rifles.

The same guess occurred to me, too: lay the tool out. Then grind the shape right into the tool to make the consistent ogive on each bullet. I wonder if a wee bit of use of emery paper on each for finish would help with a better finish or mess up the ogive.

It might be a good idea to look around the Net in advance, too. Quite a few men with shops have recently put some good machining tutorials about making firearms parts out there for free.

Some info on turning copper bullets can be gleaned from the following folks. They were great with some virtually perfect 6.8 SPC bullets for a test a while back. You’ll also find a little terminal ballistics info there.

GS Custom Bullets

[familyop: Use a hefty flow of good coolant, IMO (re, copper’s radical expansion with heat noticed in other kinds of custom jobs in the past, IIRC).]

A few more contemporary, general bullet design bits that might be interesting.
