Posted by CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash

(CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will set aside proposed gun legislation on Thursday without a final vote following the defeat a day earlier of major provisions sought by President Barack Obama and Democrats in the aftermath of the Newtown school massacre, CNN has learned.

A Senate Democratic leadership aide said Reid can bring up the package of gun proposals again if circumstances change and he believes he has the votes for key provisions to pass, particularly a measure to expand background checks on gun buyers.

In a major defeat for supporters of tougher gun laws

Head fake. Look for Reid to now go with the “nuclear” option.

Exactly! Since he voted no he can now bring it back up for another vote once some asshat who would do an evil deed regardless of ANY laws, pops his head up and takes out some more folks. The brady bunch and mark kelley-giffords are chomping at the bit hoping someone does it. The sooner the better from their point of view. Dancin’ on graves.

I’m still confused about whether universal background checks were part of the original bill. No news report I’ve read seems to acknowledge that.

Meaning, Republicans leave town.

Interesting Cloture information

These snakes (Dems) will stoop to new lows to get this passed - and cheating isn't the half of it.

It’ll be snuck into another Bill which has NOTHING to do with guns, as an ‘innocuous’ amendment.

The way of the Democrat: if their bill fails, they just wait a bit and bring it back up for a vote. They keep voting on it until it passes. Then they're done. If a Repub tried this with a Repub bill, the Dems (and the media) would howl that it had already been voted on and failed, that it's time to move on (meaning, don't bring it up again!).

The 1968 Gun Control law and Clinton’s Aw ban passed ONLY because they loaded it with PORK in the form of $$$$$ to the states for “crime control”.

One town near here got a whole $150.00 from the 1968 law.

Waiting for the next deranged nutjob for another rampage.

Make no mistake, gun control will be the hot-button issue for 2014.

Yes it was. The base bill that Reid/Schumer put forth was much worse than the carefully crafted Manchin/Toomey amendment.

Obama is pissed, so I fully expect something bigger and badder than Newtown sooner rather than later. I’m sure some nutjob’s already groomed and ready to be activated as we speak.

saw a post from another thread that suggested, speculated, posited, that Friday may see an arrest in monday’s mess, and that could be the unwasted crisis needed.

YMMV
