A Criminologist Questions Sandy Hook (long in-depth analysis)
americanthinker.com ^ | 4-18-2013 | Jason Kissner

Here, we are going to do something the MSM won't: provide context for the Sandy Hook event by conducting a statistical analysis of hard data on 30 years' worth of mass public shootings in the United States.

Quickly, though, I want to show you an example of an MSM outlet's (CNN) utter failure to do its job on Sandy Hook/Newtown.

A Sandy Hook timeline at CNN contains the following claims:

1. Police and other first responders arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls.

2. The gunman took his own life, police said. He took out a handgun and shot himself in a classroom as law enforcement officers approached, officials said.

A March 28 post at CNN asserts the following:

3. Lanza didn't make it home alive. Nor did the 26 people -- 20 of them schoolchildren ages 6 and 7 -- he shot dead in less than five minutes, firing one bullet roughly every two seconds he was at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

So, the people Lanza killed were dead in less than 5 minutes, Lanza shot himself as "law enforcement officers approached", but it also took "police and other first responders" 20 minutes to arrive on the scene?

Doesn't a reasonable construction of the above at least raise the question: so what was Lanza doing in the 15 minutes or so after the killings and before he shot himself f-- particularly when Lanza is described as trying to kill as many people as possible, and when Lanza is described as having been found dead alongside a multitude of unspent rounds?

Please notice that it doesn't matter for purposes of this issue whether the claims are accurate; what matters is that CNN asserts that they are -- so why aren't they asking the obvious follow up questions?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Listen. All these questions and concerns are by design. It is the express purpose of the media and the Obama administration to obstruct and bungle the true facts of this crisis.
They love watching the Alex Jones trufers come out with wild and crazy theories like Sandy Hook was an act. They love twisting and spinning the truth so they can grandstand off the pain and suffering of others.
Let the experts analyze the facts of Sandy Hook all they want to. Just know - without a doubt - that the MSM and Big Governnment will not cooperate.
Wow. Being an operational tester I read every word. Few want to analyze these situations for answers. They would rather forget about them or focus on enhancing their power base because of the event.
What everyone forgets about Sandy Hook is that the guns belonged to the shooter's MOTHER who failed to adequately secure her weapons. Since she was the first *victim*, nobody wants to point the blame at her but the fact of the matter is that she had a mentally ill person in her home and did not adequately keep her weapons out of his reach.
The Left intentionally ignores this in their lust for background checks and gun confiscation but the truth of the matter is that she should not have had the most lethal of the weapons in a place where her mentally ill son could get at them. Had she done so, the major tragedy could have been only a minor tragedy or no tragedy at all. She was irresponsible and paid for it with her life.
That is a very interesting piece, but it contains far too much math for reporters to understand it. The MSM is more comfortable talking about feelings and such, not so much with numbers.
Also, no one is mentioning anything about his behavior before the shooting. The media narrative is that he was an innocent victim of the weapon. That’s why there is no focus on him. He is a bit player in the “story” being told.
The article notes that one of the survivors was hit three times. If the shooter tried for multiple hits on each victim, the kill/wounded ratio makes sense.
As far as the timeline goes, psychotics can do strange things. A psychotic shooting for five minutes and then just sitting around or survey the carnage or whatever for 15 minutes is perfectly plausible.
I’m reminded of the Adam Walsh case. Walsh was the six-year old son of John Walsh (Later host of “America’s Most Wanted) who was murdered by Otis Toole. Police initially rejected Toole’s confession because it made no sense why Jacksonville resident Toole would suddenly journey down to Hollywood Florida. But Toole was not a normal person and would taken random road trips for no reason whatsoever. The case only made sense if we begin with the assumption that Toole was a strange man.
The same can be said for Lanza. One of the oldest tricks of conspiracy theorists is to start with the assumption that an accused criminal is a normal individual and then ask “why did he do it that way?” Yes, Lee Harvey Oswald would have had an easier shot if he used a different window, but who said Oswald was a genius?
Just about the entire premise for this article is that it took 20 minutes for the first police to arrive on the scene. That’s not true. It took about 3 minutes from the time the first 911 call was made for the first police to arrive (the Newtown police station is about 2 miles away from the school).
This article uses CNN as its source for the 20-minute timeline. Every outlet that uses the 20-minute response has gotten it from the incorrect CNN timeline. The original radio reports clearly demonstrate the police arrival was a mere few minutes after the first call, not 20.
The 3 minute response is misleading. That starts from the first dispatch, which would only happen after the first logged 911 call. The 911 recording notes that shots were heard for an 11-minute period, starting at 9:35, and that the police did not enter the building until after 10:00.
Of course, Lanza was already dead for several minutes by then.
25 minutes is an eternity for helpless, unarmed victims to try and avoid an armed predator. And, as you say, that 25-minute effective response is in a densely-populated NE state, with the police station 2 miles away. In a rural location, waiting for the cops is suicide mission.
It is interesting... and you’re right about reporters. Most are NOT strong in math. That said, what do you think Dr. Jason Kissner’s ‘getting at’? Is he saying the children were executed? Mob style? That would be easy to disprove. And would have been noticed by the cops... He should end this piece with more than ‘why’... On the math? Sometimes a flipped coin turns up heads six times in a row...
Good observation = it's not just the media is biased, it's also that the bias might keep the press from noticing things they need to see...
