Barack Obama can't pass gun control despite 90 per cent support.
The Telegraph ^ | April 18th, 2013 | Tim Stanley

Posted on 04/18/2013 5:45:28 AM PDT by apillar

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes – six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either.

Barack Obama is a lame duck president. Nobody listens to what he says anymore, nobody is interested in winning his approval and nobody much cares if he thinks they have “let the country down”. This is typical for a second-term president who has lost all their leverage because they’re no longer running for office and everybody is patiently waiting for the day when he quits the White House. But Obama's difficult personality has doubled the size of the challenge. Gloating in victory, adolescent in defeat – the Prez doesn’t make it easy to work with him. Why should conservative senators give him a legislative victory after he has spent four years painting them as knuckle-dragging rednecks who hate women and the poor?

Whatever your position on gun control, yesterday’s events are a damning indictment of Obama’s presidency – a flash of style, lots of soaring rhetoric and, when the votes are actually counted, little show for any of it. America has four more years of this lame-duck president telling them that it has let him down. If only he could tear up the Constitution and rule by diktat he might save himself a little disappointment. Alas, American democracy is a stickler for rules.

90% of respondents agreed to "reasonable background checks on gun purchases" -- they did not agree to expanding existing checks (in fact, some may feel the current ones are unreasonable, but would still agree with the question as posed).

He pulled the 90% number out of his ass. It’s where he gets all his numbers.

It means the public trusts their neighbors with guns more than their government to be honest.

They know that the communist agenda exposed is the communist agenda thwarted.

They still want communism, but they know they can’t do it the way 0bama is doing it.

Bullcrap

this quote from yesterdays Rush show

There's a Gallup poll out. “Only 4% of Americans Think Gun Control is an Important Problem.” Only 4%! After all the Newtown stuff on Air Force One. After all the so-called lobbying. After all of the caring. After all of the attention. After all of the focus. Only 4% of the American people think gun control is an important problem, but the people in Washington do not care. We've got Dingy Harry out talking about the anti-gun bill, letting the cat out of the bag. And that has always been the point, folks.

These polls saying that 90% of Americans believe in universal background checks, not true. They ignore the fact that nearly 100% of Americans do not think this is an issue. Only 4% of Americans think gun control’s an important problem. Can I talk to you about disconnect? If you turn on the media, if you listen to it, read it, watch it, all you'll think is going on is gun control and immigration. Alternate hours, alternate days, gun control here, immigration there. The next hour, immigration, then gun control.

Follow the links in the article.
The poll surveyed 1,772 registered voters from January 30 to February 4 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points, Quinnipiac said.

1,772 people represent the entire population of the United States, don'cha know...

I think the major issue this time is simply that the people aren't having any part of more gun control. There is a big plurality of people out there who own guns and use them sensibly. Despite an all-out propaganda effort by the media, a fresh tragedy at Newtown, and a lot of browbeating by the Schoolmarm President, the country mostly knows better.

We're not having it. That message has been clearly communicated to our elected officials in most of the country, and they pursue a gun-control agenda at peril of their political careers.

I think that's the real lesson here, and a message that has been suppressed by the media. Gun control failed at the grassroots level, period. How 'bout that power to the people?

90% support?

The writer must be thinking that, the amount of support for Obama with blacks, directly translates to the general population for all issues.

Either that or the author used an inverse of the real support which gun control gets, that being that, only about 10% support gun control, and 90% oppose it. ;)

To them, their claimed 90% is like the claims of the Global Warming Scam that “the science is settled”.

Show me the proof, and the questions put forth, and their complete analysis. They can’t. They won’t. Hockey Stick crap through and through.

MSLSD, si going buts call reps traitors, cowards and liars as well as calling the NRA the same.

They have not even mentioned or covered the TX explosion even though this is worse than Boston but then again for these clowns TX is the south , Boston the north, Boston a liberal city, West and WACO small towns in the south.

They keep referring to the 90% of people support it, well they can keep going on with that lie but even the Dems who voted against it know that is not true once the 90% is told how background checks really work

MSLSD keeps talking 90% because they got that number form a poll done by one of the liberal networks.

Now the left have their talking point , now all left wing nuts will repeat that number.

MSLSD will have to mention the explosion in TX at some point even though they know damn well that the school shooting emotion is going away and their never let a crisis go to waste is going in the crap heap

I thought his lie about the defacto registration was typical, as well.

Yeah, sure ‘bammers, it’s “illegal” for the fedgov to keep a registry of everyone that goes through the background check system,

but we dismiss your referral to the law as a restraint,
because you have shown an ubiquitous disregard for any
law restraining your power.

“Who knows where he gets his 90% figure, but all my liberal relations are citing it like it’s proof positive the republicans in congress are evil.”

Just remind them the liberal socialist democrats control the US Senate, and secondly, it was a bipartisan defeat for gun control, with five of their own democrats voting to kill it! Isn't that what the liberals always preach, “compromise?” Well they got it handed to them in spades!!
