Gun Control Meltdown
WSJ ^ | 4-17-2013

Posted on 04/18/2013 4:35:18 AM PDT by Sir Napsalot

President Obama's gun control agenda was routed in the Senate on Wednesday, and Mr. Obama naturally blamed the National Rifle Association. The truth is that Mr. Obama invited this meltdown by assuming he could exploit the Newtown massacre to ram through a liberal wish-list that wouldn't have stopped the next mass murder.

The day's biggest news was the defeat of the amendment expanding background checks by Senators Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). It fell six votes short of the 60 needed to pass, as four Democrats defected: Max Baucus (Mont.), Mark Begich (Alaska), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) and Mark Pryor (Ark.).

And that was the liberals' best hope. The President's proposed bans on certain rifles and large ammunition clips didn't even make 50 votes. ......

(snip)

The rout also vindicates Republicans who wanted the Senate to vote on the gun bill as opposed to the Rand Paul-Ted Cruz faction who sought a filibuster. For once Democrats had to declare themselves in public and couldn't hide behind shouts of "Republican obstructionism."

So much for the first big liberal hope of Mr. Obama's second term. Maybe he should consider a centrist strategy from now on.

I didn’t see him speak, but I heard it in his voice.

The petulant little entitled brat shown through his voice, loud and clear.

Not really.

Obama and the Democrats actually in private are glad to see this because they are waiting and hoping for the “next gun massacre” which they will pin on the Republicans not giving in on this gun control grab which Obama will use over and over again in ads in order to take back the House in 2014.

Hopefully AMMO prices will settle down so we can stock up for the second round.

When 22LR drop from the current .35-.50 a round to .04-.07 a round, then we'll know that the supply/demand equation is getting balanced.

Widener's last night:
IMIM193C 1200 round case IMI 55gr FMJBT Ammunition $689.00 / 1200 rd case
Gone this morning, but the best deal I've seen on that caliber in some time.

My local gun shop has WPA classic .223 @ $230 /500 right now. Outside of requiring extra cleaning time, I've not had any issues with it. At least I can actually enjoy a little practice at the range now.

“so we can stock up”

That is what has caused the ammo shortage in the first place.

I wish he DID (attend school in US).

Some early childhood beatdown might cure whatever malady he's suffereing from and beat some ‘common sense’ (as we know it) into him.

Maybe he should consider a centrist strategy from now on.

Now that's just silly. Everyone knows that when faced with the obviousness of failure jughead doubles down on that which failed. Proudly having zero common sense is an Øblowme trademark.

“Democrats who are facing tough primaires backhome have to consider their ‘centrist’ stands, and Obama will have more trouble getting his wishes done (Let’s hope so).”

My NC Democrat Senator Kay Hagan voted for the gun control bill since she consistently supports the priorities of her mentor (master) Chuck Schumer and the DNC. This morning there is nothing on her official website home page about her vote. Hagan is running for reelection in 2014 and will have a tough vote on immigration coming up. Will the Republicans be able to find and run a candidate to beat her in NC? Hagan is vulnerable but likely will beat a RINO.

“And shamelessly use those Newtown parents who in the end he did nothing for.”

I saw those people at his temper-tantrum “press conference” with plugs Biden consoling them like he was all concerned and stuff. “Shameless use” is exactly the right term. Those poor people are nothing more than stage props for 0bama, who couldn’t give two $h**s about them. How nice to have them handy for the press conference. Now he can treat them like his play-dolls and put them back on the shelf where he thinks they belong until it’s time to get them down and play with them again.

What did you expect Dingy Harry to do, anyway?

If I understand the rule correctly, it still requires 60 votes, not 60% of members present, to move the bill to a vote. Further, a quorum must be present to have the vote. The rule is to prevent chicanery like scheduling a vote for 3 AM and only telling a few of your buddies about it.

Just remember that the Statists are like the machine in batting cage – they will keep on coming no matter what.

They are just going to wait for the next “Serious Crisis” they can exploit to start this all over again.

“Grid your loins” as they say, we know what they will argue, we know what Lies and strawman they will use.

Be ready to do the same thing all over again.

AND for Pete’s sake, if you haven’t stocked up on hardware and ammo get out there and do so. You may need to wait until the hub bub dies down along with prices, but you have no excuse this time.

IF you haven’t filled out your retinue of self-defense tools, begin with what we know is one the top of their ‘to be banned’ list – Modern Sporting Rifles and Semi-auto handguns.

IF you already have you first set of these tools, consider buying some backups for same and figuring out a place to store them away.

IF you’re stocked up on ammo, wait until the prices settle out and stock up on some more please.

We know what we have in this bunch, we’ll have no excuse next time.

I wonder if after the press conference, Jay Carney went over to the parents and told them that they were on their own to get back home, since they didn't deliver the victory Dear Leader expected.

Gabby was pathetic...she looked like a bobblehead doll.

I’m not trying to piss on anything. I’m happy. But because it didn’t go down in a final vote but was withdrawn as a procedural move, it still lives and those a holes NEVER let up.

“But you must remember, my fellow-citizens, that eternal vigilance by the people is the price of liberty, and that you must pay the price if you wish to secure the blessing. It behooves you, therefore, to be watchful in your States as well as in the Federal Government.” — Andrew Jackson, Farewell Address, March 4, 1837

I got to see that live on MSNBC.
I noticed he gave the Sandy Hook Moms real big hugs and the men very light ones. It was quite a show.

Obama had little choice in this as it was a massive defeat for him.
This reminds me of 8 years ago when GWB boasted that he was using his ‘political capital’ to get SS reform only to get nothing on it. Thats exactly what arrogant Obama tried to do but he played up his own personal visibility over a longer period making it worse.

I was serious here:

If the GOP can kill this in the Senate that will be a humiliating defeat to Obama+CO, and MSNBC too.
Maddow is on the ‘ban guns’ mission with the same enthusiasm she shows for ending DOMA. (somewhat ironically if you think about it)
Seeing that arrogant smile wiped off her smug face would be a joy.

What scares me is that reid may introduce the bill again when there are only about 5 republicans in the chamber along with maybe 20 dems.

But because the Senate could not pass this ... the House will not be in any mood to even bring it to a vote if Dem shenanigans are responsible for sending it to them.
