Gun Control Meltdown
WSJ ^ | 4-17-2013

Posted on 04/18/2013 4:35:18 AM PDT by Sir Napsalot

President Obama's gun control agenda was routed in the Senate on Wednesday, and Mr. Obama naturally blamed the National Rifle Association. The truth is that Mr. Obama invited this meltdown by assuming he could exploit the Newtown massacre to ram through a liberal wish-list that wouldn't have stopped the next mass murder.

The day's biggest news was the defeat of the amendment expanding background checks by Senators Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). It fell six votes short of the 60 needed to pass, as four Democrats defected: Max Baucus (Mont.), Mark Begich (Alaska), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) and Mark Pryor (Ark.).

And that was the liberals' best hope. The President's proposed bans on certain rifles and large ammunition clips didn't even make 50 votes. ......

(snip)

The rout also vindicates Republicans who wanted the Senate to vote on the gun bill as opposed to the Rand Paul-Ted Cruz faction who sought a filibuster. For once Democrats had to declare themselves in public and couldn't hide behind shouts of "Republican obstructionism."

So much for the first big liberal hope of Mr. Obama's second term. Maybe he should consider a centrist strategy from now on.

President Obama and the term 'lame duck' met for the first time.

Democrats who are facing tough primaires backhome have to consider their 'centrist' stands, and Obama will have more trouble getting his wishes done (Let's hope so).

The more tantrum Obama throws, the more ineffective he will be.

Hopefully AMMO prices will settle down so we can stock up for the second round.

And shamelessly use those Newtown parents who in the end he did nothing for.

And yet the Libs over at the DUmp are proposing more cowbell.

It is a little hard to overstate how bad the administration got it’s butt kicked yesterday and just how much it will help republicans in general in 2014. If the left leaning senate couldn’t pass anything and the administration had to resort to emotional tactics then this is good news. But still we must remain on the alert. Sen Toomey, my Senator has some splainen to do though.

We have dead and injured in Boston and now Texas from explosions and Obama is upset about background checks. Go figure...

Before there’s a limit on the size of magazines, I want to see a limit on the size of pressure cookers. Who the heck needs a 1.6 gallon pressure cooker? No one should need anything over one gallon...

What I hope is that our constantly stating that what the left desires (disarming Americans) and the steps that they will take to achieve that (ban this, register that, confiscate) is starting to counter the knee-jerkism that drives most of the sheeple.

There should be a "cooling off period" of 24 months before the pols can go about soliciting support for reaction-legislation. Because do we really want to base laws on the feelings of voters that measure their success in life by the number of "likes" they get on their fb posts?

Don’t be too happy. They withdrew the bill. It can be reintroduced at ANY TIME Dingy Harry wants to. They will the next time some tragedy happens...

Would that this defeat would end the slimy practice of using children, dead or alive, as props for the Left’s political agenda....but I doubt it.

See how well gun control worked in Boston? Not one person was shot in that bomb attack.

Goes to show now the gun control issue is now for all purposes is DEAD. What has happened both in Boston and now in near Waco proves the need to honor Amendment #2.

Pretty much this week saw Obama’s rear-end handed to him a number of times.

“Who the heck needs a 1.6 gallon pressure cooker? No one should need anything over one gallon...”

True, nothing stops you from pressure-cooking something, putting it in the refrigerator (or freezer) and the reloading the pressure-cooker to cook more of it. And maybe doing it again once or twice more.

Yea, there will be SOME PEOPLE that claim that they need to cook for a lot of people at once, but we have catering services for that function. There is NO CULINARY JUSTIFICATION for a family to own a large pressure cooker.

The ONLY PURPOSE of a large pressure cooker is so people can load it up with nails and gunpowder and go out and kill people. Large pressure cookers are made to do nothing but kill people - they are weapons of urban warfare.

Be it resolved that henceforth pressure cookers will be limited to 2 quarts each. People that already have larger pressure cookers will have to sell them off in a other country, or turn them in on Pressure Cooker Buyback Day.

We lost an 8 year old child in Boston, and I am sickened by it. If limiting the size of pressure cookers can save ONE CHILD’s life in the future, then it is worth it.

Prices seem irrelevant when staring at empty shelves.

Gotta remember to take my phone next trip to Wally's and get a pic .. couple days ago there was nothing in common calibers .. just dusty squares where stuff used to be.

“Would that this defeat would end the slimy practice of using children, dead or alive, as props for the Left’s political agenda....but I doubt it.”

No way, they started it with the “Daisy Ad”, used it with Reagan and Newt (school lunch program), used it very effectively with Clinton and Obama. It is simply their BEST TACTIC.

A friend once observed to me, regarding Clinton, that he is ALWAYS hiding behind children and uniforms...very astute observation.

What scares me is that reid may introduce the bill again when there are only about 5 republicans in the chamber along with maybe 20 dems.

I need to thank my senator who voted against them all. Lord knows I don’t mind criticizing....

But its NOT over...so long as there is a dumblecrat majority somewhere, they will keep yammering and hammering away.
SCRU these people and the hypocrite Harry Reid. But it was funny to hear zero pouting and stompuing his foot like a 2yr old.
