Powerful Explosion Rocks Small Town North of Waco

A large explosion rocked the town of West, Texas, 19 miles north of Waco, on Wednesday evening.

A source tells News 8 that a large swath of the small town with a population of 2,800 has been leveled.

According to initial reports, the blast was at the West Fertilizer plant at 1471 Jerry Mashek Drive, about a half-mile east of Interstate 35.

Fertilizer plants are essentially low-grade munitions factories. Bit like a firecracker store ticking off.

Hmmm, fertilizer, nothing explosive about that. Seriously though, prayers to the injured and their families.

Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.

Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.

There were reports that people were trapped in the nursing home and in an apartment building.

Scanner traffic indicated that some residents of both the nursing home and apartment building were severely injured.

A triage area was established at the intersection of Haven and North Reagan Streets.

A number of buildings were reported to be burning, some in residential areas.

West Middle School was one of the buildings reported to be on fire.

Based on the pics, the explosion cloud quite literally looks like a 1-5 kiloton tacnuke.
