Memories of Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher as her granddaughter Amanda gives moving reading at funeral

Amanda Thatcher's composure and dignity at the funeral of her beloved grandmother Margaret Thatcher bore more than a passing resemblance to the Iron Lady herself.

The only daughter of the late Prime Minister's son Sir Mark and his American former wife Diane read from St Paul's Letter to the Ephesians VI. 10-18.

Dressed elegantly in black, her voice crystal clear but faltering occasionally, Amanda, 19, spoke before a congregation of 2,300 dignitaries including the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and statesmen from around the world.

No wonder the Left hates this fine lady. (and her family)

"Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

From Investor’s Business Daily:

http://news.investors.com/politics-andrew-malcolm/041713-652200-margaret-thatcher-funeral-obama-snub.htm?p=full

Prime Minister David Cameron read from the King James Bible her favorite verse John 14.1 beginning: “Let not your heart be troubled.”

The sonorous chimes of London’s iconic Big Ben clock were silenced throughout the procession and service.
There was, however, no traditional RAF flyover. The conservative Thatcher left word she would find that a waste of precious pounds.

Among the many dignitaries attending today’s service were former prime ministers John Major, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair along with Canadian leaders Stephen Harper and Brian Mulroney and several Middle Eastern leaders.

Cultural icons such as Michael Caine, David Frost, Richard Attenborough, Shirley Bassey, Michael Crawford and Andrew Lloyd-Webber also attended, as did 10 staff members from the Ritz Hotel as a symbol of appreciation for their care during Thatcher’s last weeks.

Henry Kissinger, Newt Gingrich and Dick Cheney attended as private U.S. citizens.

President Obama has created his own reputation as anti-British through serial snubs of its leaders and gifts.

Whether there’s a connection between his obvious feelings and Britain’s colonial rule of Kenya, the homeland of Obama’s absentee father, is really irrelevant. It’s shown Obama as a petty, parochial pol, hardly presidential.

The Democrat is often photographed with his feet atop the presidential desk, a gift from Britain decades ago made from the timbers of a British man-of-war.

You may recall on his first day in the Oval Office, Obama ordered the gift bust of Winston Churchill removed and returned to Britain. He famously gave Brown a gift of American movie DVD’s, which won’t play on British machines. He’s declined to appear jointly with some Brits and generously gave the queen an iPod packed with recordings of his own speeches.

But Obama trumped himself this week by declining to send any representative of his administration to the funeral of free-market advocate Thatcher. The Chicago Democrat appointed instead two former secretaries of State in Republican administrations—James Baker and George Schultz—and a staffer from the embassy in London.

I cannot imagine how intimidating such a setting had to be for Amanda Thatcher! Nothing like making a huge public debut with so many people watching.

Good on her for having the courage to do so and to take part in her grandmother’s funeral. It’s always so difficult and to think she managed with just a few breaks in her voice.

The Iron Lady would be proud. RIP PM Thatcher.

The last few days, I was thinking not only of what has happened in Boston, but of the Iron Lady, who was in her time as British PM, one tough lady.

Very well written and sums up the rogue perfectly. His feelings about colonial Britain are irrelevant, and he IS a “...petty, parochial pol, hardly presidential.” Seeing him with his feet on that heirloom desk makes me so angry. I just hope there is an expert at the Smithsonian who can refinish it successfully.

Thatcher survived a bomb assassination attempt herself. The Brighton hotel bombing occurred on 12 October 1984 at the Grand Hotel in Brighton, England. A long-delay time bomb was planted in the hotel by Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) member Patrick Magee, with the intention of assassinating Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet, who were staying at the hotel for the Conservative Party conference.

Although Thatcher narrowly escaped injury, five people were killed (including two high-profile members of the Conservative Party) and 31 were injured.

The bomb detonated at 2:54 a.m. on 12 October. The midsection of the building collapsed into the basement, leaving a gaping hole in the hotel’s façade. Firemen said that many lives were likely saved because the well-built Victorian hotel remained standing.

Margaret Thatcher was still awake at the time, working on her conference speech for the next day in her suite. The blast badly damaged her bathroom, but left her sitting room and bedroom unscathed. Both she and her husband Denis escaped injury. She changed her clothes and was led out through the wreckage along with her husband and Cynthia Crawford (her friend and aide) and driven to Brighton police station.

Margaret Thatcher began the next session of the conference at 9:30 a.m. the following morning, as scheduled.

She dropped from her speech most of her planned attacks on the Labour Party and said the bombing was “an attempt to cripple Her Majesty’s democratically elected Government”:

“That is the scale of the outrage in which we have all shared, and the fact that we are gathered here now—shocked, but composed and determined—is a sign not only that this attack has failed, but that all attempts to destroy democracy by terrorism will fail.”

One of her biographers wrote that Thatcher’s “coolness, in the immediate aftermath of the attack and in the hours after it, won universal admiration. Her defiance was another Churchillian moment in her premiership which seemed to encapsulate both her own steely character and the British public’s stoical refusal to submit to terrorism”.

Immediately afterwards, her popularity soared almost to the level it had been during the Falklands War.

The Saturday after the bombing, Thatcher said to her constituents: “We suffered a tragedy not one of us could have thought would happen in our country. And we picked ourselves up and sorted ourselves out as all good British people do, and I thought, let us stand together for we are British! They were trying to destroy the fundamental freedom that is the birth-right of every British citizen, freedom, justice and democracy”.

Considering it took Obama time to refer to the bombing attack(s) up in in Boston as “terrorism” the day after shows his slow response as a leader, leads from behind.

I can still see the “Steely Eyes of an Eagle” in Cheney, just as he did the day W handed it over to the Quisling little Fraud.
