Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he would support a new ban on assault weapons as an amendment to pending gun control legislation.

""I will vote for Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban," Reid said in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor.

"I will vote for assault weapons ban because maintaining law and order and saving lives is more important than preventing imagined tyranny."

"Today I choose to vote my conscience, not only as Harry Reid, a United States Senator, but also as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and — I hope — a friend to lots and lots of people," Reid concluded.

Reid's support for a new assault weapons ban marks a final break between the Nevada Democrat and the National Rifle Association, with whom he has previously enjoyed a relatively warm relationship.

Until recently, Reid's campaign website even featured an endorsement from NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre that expressly praised Reid for opposing a new assault weapons ban.

The vast majority of colonists in America accepted the edicts of the British government, but a small group of men who wanted freedom would not settle for living their lives under what they saw as tyranny. We all know the rest of the story....as does that worm, Harry Reid.

Its all politics. He knows it won't pass. Hell, even the background check portion of the bill doesn't seem to have enough votes when (allegedly) 80% of the country wants that! He just want to say he wants to protect the kids.

Heck, he is part of the tyranny! The only way we protect our liberty is with force. You don't think the fact 200 million guns are in this country isn't a factor in our stability! What is the first thing a dictator does - shut the presses, take the guns. Little tougher here - although one could argue they own most of the networks.

Of course, no one mentions that the background check (at gun shows and internet only) part of the bill is fairly benign; the real issue is the retention of the background check information. This aspect is the slippery slope toward gun registration. That is the issue; not background checks at gun shows. But, even that can't get passed.

He’s there thanks to the unions in vegas. Not many in the rest of the state (overwhelmed by the vegas population) have any use for hairy screed. And it appears that dean heller, who just barely got past shelley berzerkly, isn’t doing a stellar job. He’s gotten hammered by his constituents. The ever affable hairy has 4 more years and heller just started his term.
