The White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are shy of the 60 votes they need to move the bipartisan compromise bill on background checks for gun sales.
Vice President Joe Biden has been personally calling senators to urge them to support the measure, Democratic aides say.
Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) began a whip count on Monday, Democratic aides said, and Biden has been pressuring his fellow Democrats to fall in line. Bidens office did not return an email seeking comment.
Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) are co-sponsoring the proposal that would expand background checks for commercial gun purchases including those at gun shows and online opening a pathway for the biggest change in U.S. gun laws in nearly two decades.
A cloture vote on the Manchin-Toomey could come by Thursday, Democrats said.
Toomey on Monday afternoon acknowledged they dont yet have the votes.
Im cautiously optimistic. Were not there at the moment but were working on it, Toomey said.

Is this before or after the blackmail and bribery?
Barry’s Chicago boys will make them an offer they can’t refuse.
A Republican Senate would be a wonderful thing, keep pushing, keep pushing!
Will Lautenberg be able to Torchelli his way back to DC to vote and save the day?
He's short on other things as well.
Don’t believe this for a second, that they don’t have the votes.
Keep the pressure on all the Senators—no more bills restricting the Second Amendment!
Lautenberg returns to vote on the Gun Control Bill. His name is called and he opens his mouth to answer, and falls over dead. The Democrats near him swear he said "aye," and the Republicans said he didn't say anything. A huge political fight ensues.
I can tell you Mark Prior from AR know if he supports this he is history. I have emailed him on this issue. He is typical democrat deceitful manipulator but he also wants the Senate seat. It s that close here in AR.
I wonder if my beloved US Senator Grahamnesty is in favor of this? I assume Tim Scott (DeMint’s replacement/appointment) is not.
Well, the article says Linda is voting “no”. How about that?
graham is a “nay”
Im cautiously optimistic. Were not there at the moment but were working on it, Toomey said.
I’m cautiously optimistic that Toomey will choke and go into convulsions during dinner.
No such luck.
Benedict Arnold toomey/
Two faced traitor.
I’m guessing that as a result of today’s events the gun grabbers have lost a little more ground.
Boston vividly demonstrates the wisdom of our American founders in providing that we have the unfettered right to arms to defend ourselves. There is no perfect answer but, as many sheriffs across USA recently told us, the govt simply cannot defend us all well. Response times vary but can be an hour or more in rural areas and in big cities (due to traffic, etc). Unconstitutional abridgments of our right to arms must be ended asap, and not “strengthened” or expanded.
Its so comforting to know that Reid and these other assholes are so concerned about our safety that they to disarm us. What’s a few dead Americans killed because of lax immigration policies anyway? Yeah, people died on Boston. So what? The Senate has better things to worry about.
