'Nazi' theme draws leave

Assigning essay against Jews widely condemned.
The Albany school district has placed on leave a teacher whose persuasive writing assignment was for students to argue that Jews are evil in order to convince a Nazi official of their loyalty.

The teacher was not in class at Albany High School on Friday and Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard said the district will take some form of disciplinary action. She said it was too early to say exactly what that would be, but it could range from a letter of reprimand to termination. She did not say when the district would allow the teacher back in the classroom and suggested it may not happen before the end of the year. The district will also bring in sensitivity trainers from the Anti-Defamation League to work with teachers and students before the end of the school year.

At a news conference on Friday with members of the Anti-Defamation League and Jewish Federation of New York, Vanden Wyngaard apologized to the community for the assignment and said diversity is valued deeply in the district. She said she was shocked at the insensitive lesson and the awful leap it asked students to make. "You asked a child to support the notion that the Holocaust was justified, that's my struggle," she said. "It's an illogical leap for a student to make."

is the superintendent sorry for this incompetent teacher's thoughtlessness, OR is she sorry that they got caught? Rhetorical question of the day: If this teacher gave her Black students an assignment arguing in favor of cross burnings and Jim Crow laws....well we all get the idea.

To debate issues it's worth learning how those on the other side think about them. I can think of a thousand ways other than the one this particular teacher selected to use. But isn't this in New York where every teacher is a member of a militant union given over to totalitarian thought?

There are no surprises in this.

It's clear from the context that the teacher was not taking the Nazis' side: "your very life in the Third Reich is at stake in your answer".

She (or he) was showing how even classic forms of argument: ethos, pathos, or logos, could be misused for intellectually unscrupulous ends.

It is not a lesson that all high schoolers are intellectually or emotionally prepared to handle, and the teacher needed to get the students' informed buy-in on the value for them in life as an educated citizen of this republic.

i agree... i believe the lesson was taken out of context... in this day and age, with so much sensitivity, she was unwise to assign it...

i taught our homeschool group a few years ago American History... when we came to the Salem Witch Trials, i had the students to do a mock trial... some played the accusers, some the accused... some the defenders... it teaches them to look at all sides of an argument... even the wrong side...

Yes. That would be the correct way to do it.

I rather doubt that was what was happening. If it were they’d have simply made the case as you two did in a few concise paragraphs.

Instead, they reacted like they’d been caught with their hands in the cookie jar and their faces covered with crumbs.

The teacher would have told us him or herself. As it is we know nothing about this teacher.

The teacher who gave the assignment, including the instructing students’ own experiences (presumably with Jews being “the source of our problems”), has been partially identified as a female veteran.

Actual assignment can be viewed:

AH! Thanks! That's the first I've heard of anything about the actual teacher.

A vet?

She can use the Twinkie, uh, Feinstein defense:

It isn’t so much the teacher’s use of the assignment (although what person wouldn’t look at that assignment and think, ‘This just isn’t right’) the BIG problem is whoever created and approved it. Would it have gotten past the editors if the pursuasive argument to Nazi leadership was “Homosexuals are evil?” Not a chance. Or, a pursuasive argument to the government of then-Taliban ruled Afghanistan that “Atheists are evil?”
