Nigeria’s main militant group threatens attack on Islamic institutions

ABUJA, April 14 — Nigeria’s main militant group, the Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), on Sunday threatened to perpetrate attacks on Islamic institutions in the west African country from next month.

The group, in an electronic message to journalists, said its attacks will be code-named “Operation Barbarossa”, aimed at saving Christianity in Nigeria from annihilation by the Boko Haram sect, which has been attacking churches and media and security outfits since 2009.

MEND said when hostilities against Islamic institutions begin on May 31, it will target mosques, pilgrimage camps, large congregations in Islamic events and assassination of clerics that propagate doctrines of hate.

The group will make bombing one of its main means of attack, according to the statement from its spokesperson Jomo Gbomo.

A ceasefire may be considered in the future for “Operation Barbarossa”, if the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other credible Christian organizations in the country assure there is a cessation of hostilities targeted at Christians in their places of worship, made privately or publicly by the real Boko Haram leadership, the statement added.

MEND, the largest militant group in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, gained prominence in 2006 when it began to fight for total control of the Niger Delta’s oil wealth, saying local people had not gained from the riches under the ground and the region’s creeks and swamps.

Nigeria is a large country with a powerful military (by African standards) and it won't collapse overnight but it is heading that way fast. There's no telling how long the bloated and corrupt government can hold on as Boko Haram (Western Teaching is a Sin), the militant Islamic group and MEND (Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta), the Christian equivalent fight each other and the government.

The wild card, of course, is oil. Will the west let the oil supply be interrupted or will they "restore order" like in Libya?

Great. Now Obama has to crush them.

MEND is “Christian Equivalent”? Hardly, it looks like they’re merely saying enough is enough finally...

Good luck to ‘em I say...

I’m glad at least SOMEONE has balls enough to get after the islamofacists.

Seems they can just cut throats, bomb churches, throw acid in ladies’ faces and such - but nobody gets after them?

Of course Obama has to crush them. This is a modern equivalent of a Crusade.

Politically incorrect fact: The Crusade was a counter-offensive against the Islamist invasion of Europe.

MEND is “Christian Equivalent”? Hardly,...

Poor choice of words. However few African rebel groups elevate to the level of "noble". The government of President Goodluck Johnathan is nominally Christian and they are corrupt on a level that even Washington DC envies.

Well, I pray they are successful, but I do not have much hope in their tactics if they are revealing their plans to the enemy.

The Crusade was a counter-offensive against the Islamist invasion of Europe.

Nope. By the time of the Crusade, Muslim presence was limited to part of the Iberian Peninsula. They'd been been expelled from southern Italy, Sicily, Cyprus and Crete. The Reconquest of Iberia was proceeding, though it was later itself classified as Crusade.

I agree the Crusades were a counter-attack, but the area at issue was the Holy Land.

The only logical response to unprovoked violence against you and/or your group, is a violent response — kill or be killed. Even the Europeans are going to come to that conclusion very soon.
