The Polish media is angry over the portrayal of the country's World War II resistance fighters in a popular miniseries that aired recently in Germany. So angry, in fact, that a Polish weekly has put an image of Chancellor Merkel as a concentration camp prisoner on its cover and accused Germany of rewriting history.
Ever since it aired in Germany in March, the World War II miniseries has been lauded as a milestone in the country's ongoing process of atonement. Filmed by public broadcaster ZDF, "Our Mothers, Our Fathers" depicts the roles of ordinary Germans in the war, but without the moral judgement that has been applied so often in the past.
Germans loved it. But Poles? Not so much. Since the miniseries concluded, the Polish media has erupted with criticism, alleging that it not only painted Germans as victims, but falsely represented the roles of Polish resistance fighters in the Armia Krajowa (AK), or Home Army.
On Tuesday, their outrage came to a head when the conservative weekly news magazine Uwazam Rze published a cover story with an illustration of German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a concentration camp prisoner, under the headline, "Falsification of History: How the Germans Are Turning Themselves into Victims of the Second World War."
..The three-part series follows the lives of five young German friends through the war, including the Jewish character Viktor, who manages to break out of a train transporting him and others to a concentration camp. On the run, he finds shelter with resistance fighters in German-occupied Poland, but quickly gleans from their frequent anti-Semitic comments that he must hide his Jewish heritage to survive.
While there is evidence that Home Army units helped Poland's Jews, there are also disputed reports of anti-Semitic sentiments among them.

For those who don't know -- after WWII, Poland was physically pushed West -- it lost it's eastern territories (especially around Lwów) and was pushed to the Oder-Neisse line
One of the ways in which the Germans and their useful idiot friends are rewriting the history of WWII is by avoiding the word “German” and replacing it with the word “Nazi”. It was Nazis this, Nazis that (you’ve seen it, here, among many other places), and never who those mythical Nazis were. In fact, not that many Germans, and certainly not all of Wehrmacht and SS were members of the National Socialist party. It wasn’t the party which started the war, and it wasn’t the party, political party, that committed war crimes. Shame that something so obvious has to be stated.
A continuation of the ongoing slanders perpetuated against Poland, applied in conjunction with what appears to be an apologetic or loose attempt at justification for the craven behavior of the German people in, and prior to, World War Two. This is utterly shameful in my view, considering — among many other important facts — that an enormous and vibrant Jewish population was famously welcomed and nurtured in Poland for over a thousand years. Incidentally, the Bielski Partisans were Polish Jews, responsible for almost 400 confirmed enemy kills.
That being said, such a magazine illustration, much less a cover illustration, is inappropriate and provocative. Not that I would recoil from provoking those historically abusive nation-states to the West, and to the East, of Poland. It just seems like bad form to publish such an illustration.
Polish anti-semitism is apparently a big secret.

The difference is that the Germans were more effective than the Russians and also, the Russians are still linguistically similar in comparison to German.
Quite frankly, come visit Warsaw once -- I never realised why Poles separated history into "before the war" and "after the war" until I moved to wa-wa --> on every street corner you will find some memorial or the other that says "on this site in xx 1944, yy number of Poles were killed by the Germans"
I find it hard that they can forgive Germans for that...
in this case, I, unfortunately, agree with them -- the portrayal of AK as anti-semitic against the "good Germans" is highly provocative.
