Home Depot Co-founder: Obamacare Will ‘Kill Off’ Small Business

Retired Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus declared to Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview that “Obamacare is going to kill off small business.”

“If [employees] are thrown out of their medical plans now, where they’re covered in a good plan and thrown under the bus, they’re going to be destroyed,” Marcus said on Thursday. “If, in fact, they don’t stay as full-time employees but go to part-time employees, they’re going to be destroyed.

He talked to Newsmax at the Job Creators Alliance Free Enterprise Leadership Summit in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

“People have to understand that the villain is not their employer; the villain is the U.S. government,” Marcus added. “Obamacare is the capper. That’s the bullet to the temple.”

Marcus, who retired from Home Depot in 2002, established the Job Creators Alliance two years ago. The nonprofit group seeks to advocate for entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

Obamacare is going to kill off small business.
That's the whole point

The primary goal of Communism is to destroy the Bourgeoisie Class, which in the US is largely made of Middle Class small business owners and employees including private practice doctors and physicians

It's plain to see that the Democrats and Obama have foucsed like a laser beam on the destruction of these segments of society.

It's also these same people who provide the dynamic job growth need to pull the country out of recessions, and their ongoing under the radar destruction is the primary reason we are not pulling out of this recession

yeah right, big box stores brought down Germany, and SUV’s caused global warming in Greenland in the 1300s. Any other “films” you’ve seen lately you want to share?

Thanks for posting. Bernie Marcus, who retired many many years before HD got into all of their pollitical correctness and so on, has been one of the best pro opportunity voices in the nation for years - and is brilliant when he tells how liberal government is preventing business opportunities today - the opportunities he’s already had and made zillions from. It is a shame that ignorant hatefilled Freepers think he’s complaining, or blaming him for HD’s current stances on social issues, and show their abject lack of any understanding of basic economics with their bizarre and absurd rants.

Any Bernie Marcus interview is a great lesson on pure opportunity economics, and he’s terrific at it. He’s helped create more millionaires out of ordinary folks, who happen to start working for him at the right time, than just about anyone else alive in the country today....and his message about how that could not happen today is not a complaint for him - he’s made his - it’s a warning to all of us who would like such a chance.

It’s happening everywhere, while the receivers of received wisdom tell us to learn “basic economics”. I’ve just seen a film about a ghost town in Germany, whose economy was completely, entirely destroyed by such big box stores. Hey, but drive by a HD and you’ll see how many jobs are created there for illegal immigrants.

It's called capitalism. I saw a film about how Wal-Mart moved into a town and "destroyed" all the small businesses. I was cheering for Wal-Mart.

Hey, but drive by a HD and you’ll see how many jobs are created there for illegal immigrants.

And furthermore, these big retailers like Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Target do NOT hire illegal immigrants. The fact is these corporations actually have formal hiring processes in place and contract out employee background checks to third party professional services. They have way too much to lose. It's actually small businesses, proprietorships, individuals that hire the bulk of illegal aliens.

I asked my sister just last week some facts as my BIL has 110 employees in one location with at least BSEE’s or BSAE’s and many who are more educated in just one location. Yes, he has secretaries there plus a few more lower pay scale types. In short, he is paying the same $ amount and even more to his employees for the same medical, dental, plus life and vision care they had last year, but; they have to pay their part/ some now. I asked her if that some was substantial? She replied it was. Obamacare is a job killer, and; it has hurt the workers and even middle to upper management as my BIL may well be a multimillionaire living in a 10K sq ft house. I am glad for him. I am proud of all who live the American dream. Obama has made those folks the ENEMY. Those are the job creators. I helped him form his business in 2002. He went from nothing to almost a billion in Gov contracts.

Yes, but the Republican leadership obviously agrees with that goal. Maybe they think small business is a big pain to deal with, too. I mean, why deal with 10,000 squabbling contributors with competing interests when you can just support the one big one in return for steady checks? Much more convenient, for all concerned...

Of course Obama is a socialist, but too many Americans see nothing wrong with socialism. In any case. he should not be president that blacks voted him in to get revenge on whites. The same kind of thinking that has ruined so many African states.

A friend just bemoaned the fact that she’s gonna pay a lot in taxes this year [and her family is by NO means ‘wealthy..far from it] and immediately added “but it’s not Obama’s fault”.

What can you even begin to say to someone so ‘devout’?

A locally owned Ace Hardware store about 5 miles from my house is also within 5 miles of 2 Home Depots and 2 Lowes. It has been in business for over 40 years and is thriving. Very heavy on service and prices are competitive. Many of the staple items are high quality, not the cheap Chinese junk at the big boxes. It demonstrates a small business can compete if the owner truly understands the customer.

In contrast my builder chose a local small business as the sub to install the gutters on my house. Five years later the paint on the surface is splotchy because he scratched up the surface during the install, spray painted the scratches, and the spray paint has faded to a different shade than the original surface. The gutter installer and the contractor refuse to fix the problem even though I have a written 15 year warranty on the paint not fading and the installation. I suspect if I’d contracted the job to HD or Lowes and the same thing happened the big boxes would have replaced it. By the way my attorney says it will cost as much as the potential compensation is worth to sue them, if I can collect should I win. No doubt they are aware of the high cost of litigation and are correctly betting I’ll not sue.

Quite frankly it has been my experience the consumer is more likely to be cheated by small business people than big retailers. Particularly small business people who sell infrequently purchased products. The gutter guy and the contractor know I’ll never use them again so the perceived cost of not backing their work is low.

Ignorance is bliss. HD sided with BO and is on every pro gay marriage list. You won’t see me caring how much money anyone has, check my record.

HD has done more than anyone I’ve seen to destroy small business. I can’t find a local hardware store to depend on like we had in the past, HD ate them up, and I can’t shop there even, because one they won’t assist and tw I don’t want a dime of mine going to a pro gay marriage or any thing associated w BO.

Check how much they gave to BO if you want to call others ignorant, but they helped this guy they now complain about while they inconvenience us through their support of him and through their eating up small hardware store business.

Then you are blissful - with two gigantic blind spots right off the bat. First, HD did not “eat up” any small business. The market responds to what SHOPPERS wanted - and if enough shoppers wanted all of those small hardware stores, they would STILL BE HERE PERIOD. By your thinking, all we would have are a bunch of small tiny merchants like downtown Dehli. Is that how you see America?

HD WAS a small busindss. Then they did well, and then they became a BIG bisiness. Many poor and middle class people became wealthy working for and investing in HD from the early days. Not just the three principles. Isn’t that the American dream? And is True Value also a problem? Lowes? How about Wal-Mart. Where the hell do you draw the line on what too big of a business success is? You are an economic liberal!!!! Which is to say, economic liberal. You clearly are obsessed with your bank account and your envy of Marcus.

Second, you don’t understand how the massive employment HD was involved in created many other businesses and jobs you don’t “see” the way you see a closed down hardware store. They are there. This is how an economy works. It is not static. Never has been, except in dirt poor countries who are much the same as they were hundreds of years ago. Economies CANNOT thrive and stand still at the same time. It’s not possible.

Third, Bernie Marcus has nothing to do with HD’s current stance on gay issues - but you are so blinded - I mean, I slam the left all the time for using the term “homophobic” - because an irrational fear is a phobia - and yet, I think it fits you. You are so phobic about one issue that you cannot appreciate what Marcus is saying about an entirely different issue.
