Justice Thomas: Many black communities in decline
AP via Washington Observer-Reporter ^ | April 9, 2013

PITTSBURGH – Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said Tuesday he is heartbroken over the persistent poverty and social troubles among many black communities but has no answers on how to solve these problems.

Thomas spoke to an appreciative audience at Duquesne Law School in Pittsburgh. The crowd of about 1,200 people responded with both applause and laughter as he discussed politics, the makeup of the Supreme Court, race, and his own struggles to find his path in life.

Thomas said he doesn’t bear any ill-will toward other people who hold views sharply different from his.

“If I was going to have hard feelings, it’d be mostly on race issues,” Thomas said. “My heart is broken because I worked in the inner cities.”

"persistent poverty and social troubles among many black communities"

The "black communities" part is the root of the problem. I have met people who cared about the "white community", and they disgust me. There is no way in the world I would live near a "white community". I live in a community of successful, hard-working people. My black neighbors have the same race friends as I do, over half white, and nearly 1/3 Asian, and they're only black in skin color not in culture, same for their kids. I don't think it's possible to succeed if you have a built in excuse for failure and you look down on hard work as "acting white". It's time to move past race and "diversity" and just look at the content of a person's character, not the color of their skin, if we want everyone to have a chance to succeed.

No worries - the President will be riding in on his chopper to save the day...I hear he has a smart guy that will address the issues...

Justice Thomas needs to not worry about his validation if that could be apart of his hurtful deep feelings. Millions of Americans respect him and others like him. He is a good man. The people who have worked to destroy him are filled with hatred as they have done wrongs to other nominees over the past as well. Those who show no good quality, nor win by honor, can not claim a victory. I know it must be hard for him at times, and if I lived among the pillars of D.C., I would long for being away from there myself. God Bless Justice Thomas and to keep him safe and strong.

Thomas knows that, he’s not meaning to make it a racial issue. However, it’s not a racial thing, it’s socialism at the heart of the problems.

Scotland, which owned the twentieth century is in the same mess, with 80% of the population dependent upon getting a welfare cheque.

Whites don’t have COMMUNITIES per se. I HATE that Blacks need COMMUNITY LEADERS and SPOKESMEN!! Makes them look like PETS and incapable individuals.

Name one majority black city or portion of a city that does not have elevated crime rates, a lower standard of living, and lesser academic success among students. Not all the cultures or politics in these various cities are similar, yet the results tend to be.

How about we start by recognizing what MLK wanted us to - that skin color doesn't matter? When LBJ and the Democrats successfully entrenched the majority of the black community under the Democrat ‘umbrella’, they did a very grave injustice. First, that type of approach undercuts the fact that the black community, like all communities, is not monolithic but is diverse and made up of individuals. The Democrats have pushed blacks away from their rich individuality and expect them to be like-voting automatons. Any black who strays from this is targeted.

Second, instead of featuring the successes of individual blacks in the private sector, the Democrats feature only black politicians who ‘preach’ the Democrat message that blacks need them to survive. That is unadulterated b.s., and extremely harmful to a community that should at this point in their history be living the American dream based on the richness of their talents and their efforts.

Many black communities in decline

If he is talking about the black subculture of the American culture, beyond the destructive chaos wroght by the Great Society, where isn't it in decline? Same with most or all other subcultures.

It's the socialism/collectivism/community/village/gang/criminal/thug/rapist/looter/murderer/thief/plunderer, stupid.

They're all part of the same virulent strain of anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-individual, anti-life evil.

Get out from under the robe, justice.

If they just stick with the Democrats for another 100 years things should be much better.

Back during the time of the Great Society I was riding in a car with a man who was the Secretary of the State of Illinois. I was a young girl, riding in the backseat, this man was driving and my father was in the passenger seat.
I heard and remember to his day this man, a close friend of my father’s, say “Look, these colored all they want to do is get drunk and screw, so we will give them the money to keep them happy and we HAVE THEIR VOTE.” This man was known as Mr. DEMOCRAT and ran downstate politics in Illinois for many years. So there is the historic position of Democratic politicians concerning the Black population and the Great Society.

I’d say he had it pegged, as did LBJ, and FDR. Something for nothing is an easy sale every time.

It’s a good thing blacks are not responsible for themselves.

I would argue that you are wrong. Racism is at the root. The social services provided by the left ate the vehicle used to segregate and improve the racist tendencies.

The majority of black communities do not want to integrate or become part of American society. They insist on remaining black and tribal and inferior. That is racism..... pure and simple

Could the black community have a problem with RESPONSIBILITY?

Gee, I’ll take a wild guess that that word is not spoken or taught in these poor downtrodden ghettos of government welfare fraud.

They “made their bed and now lay down in it to sleep” as the old saying goes.

The black (and brown) “poor” communities have gone far past the “Rubicon” in the pursuit of personal responsibility and will never return to a productive and responsible society.

As more and more government action is taken to “protect” this class of people, they will eat and breed to the point that the majority of our population will live off the hard work of the responsible.

I assume you're referring to the corrupt Democrat, Paul Powell, Mr. Shoe Box himself....and long-time Illinois Secretary of State.

His demise in 1970 was notable with the later discovery of $800,000 in illicit cash stuffed in shoe boxes along with 49 cases of whiskey and 14 transistor radios among other things in the downstate Springfield hotel suite where he lived while in office.

When he'd visit the Chicago suburbs he and his entourage would regularly sweep into a local Elmhurst restaurant popular with politicians for dinner. At the hostess station in the front lobby, there was always an open box of fine cigars so the pols could grab one on the way out after dining.

The hostess told me that on the way out Powell would always help himself to not one, but every stogie, box and all.

The guy couldn't keep himself from stealing.

Think about this for a moment: It we could snap our fingers and instantly make every human being in America “pasty white skinned”, would things be any different. I say NO! We would still have this socialistic entitlement society with an ever increasing number of people dependent on the government and taking no responsibility for themselves. The socialists in power would want to keep it this way so they could insure they continue to get elected. Sad state of affairs.
