Rick Warren says 'haters celebrate' his pain after son's suicide

Posted on 04/09/2013 3:42:25 PM PDT by MNDude

Rick Warren said it's been difficult to deal with some of the hate mail and online comments he's read since announcing Saturday that his son had committed suicide.

"Grieving is hard. Grieving as public figures, harder. Grieving while haters celebrate your pain, hardest," Warren wrote on Facebook on Monday night.

Warren has been deluged with words of support both at his Saddleback Church in Orange County and on the Web.

“Kay and I are overwhelmed by your love, prayers, and kind words,” the pastor wrote.

But there have also been many words of hate on various website comment boards, including some blaming Warren for his son's death.

I don’t follow his religious stand either, but I can sure empathize with the pain he and his family are experiencing right now, and the absolute horror that comes with the nasty stuff people say.

I hope and pray that no matter what, Mr. Warren and his family emerge from the other side of this hellish trial with a renewed love for YHVH of Israel, and a greater capacity for HIS truth.

Heresy hunters right here on FR can’t let the man alone to grieve. Offer support or STFU.

Is this really a Catholic Monastery? Is this really even a Catholic? This is the most shameful thing I've heard in a long while. Sounds like a place that buggers the alter boys to me.

IMO, there is NO WAY the Church would approve of this.

The Bible I read says something to the effect of:

“. . . rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep . . . .”

I am not a huge Rick Warren fan, but it is a despicable act to heap contempt on ANYONE who is grieving. Many are also rejoicing at the death of Margaret Thatcher. Is there any doubt that God has given over the western world to the lusts of their hearts and debased minds? All I can do anymore is just shake my head in sorrow and disgust.

Yep. I don’t always hold to it; but I try to not post anything that I wouldn’t say to someone if they were face to face.

from Wikipedia

Warren has worked to shift the evangelical movement away from an exclusive focus on traditional evangelical social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage (regarding the latter, he called divorce a greater threat to the American family[29]), to broader social action. Warren's five-point plan for global action, the P.E.A.C.E. Plan, calls for church-led efforts to tackle global poverty and disease, including the spread of HIV/AIDS, and to support literacy and education efforts around the world. In February 2006, he signed a statement backing a major initiative to combat global warming, thus breaking with other conservative, high-profile evangelical leaders, who had opposed such a move.[30]

Warren's softer tone on political issues once central to U.S. evangelicals and his concern for issues more commonly associated with the political left have resulted in the characterization of Warren as one of a "new breed of evangelical leaders."[31] But it has also been misunderstood by the media, according to Warren, as indicating a shift in position on traditional evangelical issues.[32]

All I need to know....Brokeback Church indeed

“Rick Warren on Gay Marriage: ‘Tolerance Does Not Mean Approval”

“Gay marriage is a very personal question,” Warren responded when asked why he does not support it. “I have biblical views regarding what marriage is about. I am not in favor of redefining marriage, I'm not. It's not illegal to have a gay relationship, so it's not a big issue to me.”

Rick Warren does NOT support gay marriage, therefore your petty and self righteous demagoguery only makes you look bad.

The man lost his son to suicide. So you take the opportunity to attack the man over his politics and less than desirable church leadership. That makes you an asshole.

Make no mistakes, I was born an asshole and just grew bigger.

I have no use for Warren and his version of Christianity or any of his missions.

I extended sympathy for the loss of his son, but I don’t believe in him or his teachings.

I have met more than a few brilliant theological people over the years, and I don’t need to meet him to know he ain’t it.

Understood. The debate over his version of Christianity is a valid one, but not when the man just lost his boy. That’s just cruel. If you care about any version of Christianity, I hope you’d at least care about one that is compassionate toward those who are hurting.
