Airbus factory in Mobile could mean more jobs for South Mississippians

Airbus is beginning construction on a new assembly plant in Mobile that could mean jobs for South Mississippi residents.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday morning at the 1,650-acre Brookley Aeroplex industrial park, site for the new plant.

The $600 million factory is expected to employ 1,000 people once production of the Airbus A320 jet begins around 2015.

"And because of the amount of employees they're going to need ... I believe it's a great opportunity for the technical-oriented employees of Jackson County to be able to find good-paying jobs at that facility," Mangum said. "So I think it's a win for Jackson County, for us to be close to that site and be able to take advantage of it."

If they had drawn the longitude line straight, Mobile would be in Mississippi. Poor Mississippi, the 3 biggest cities are New Orleans, Mobile, and Memphis, all draining revenue from the state. Anyway, at least a short commute to Mobile.

BUT...

Biloxi, Mississippi and Pensacola, Florida are both less than 60 miles from Mobile on I-10.
