UPDATE (April 2, 2013) – Yesterday was a landmark day for Alaskan knife owners. HB 33 and SB 11 were combined. What is needed now before the session ends on April 14 is for HB 33 to pass the Senate and receive a concurrence in the House. Doing so will make it legal for an adult 18 years and older to own a Switchblades and Gravity knife. The American Knife & Tool Institute continues to stay in touch with Rep. Mark Neuman’s office to provide support.
Alaska Bill Would Better Define Gravity and Switchblade Knives and Enact Knife Preemption
“House Bill 33 will protect Alaskans who carry one of these pocket knives from running afoul of local laws by reserving the right to regulate knives to the State, and define spring-loaded hunting, fishing, or utility knives as legal,” Neuman, R-Su-Valley, said. “Spring-loaded knives are an important tool for working Alaskans, and our outdoorsmen and women. We shouldn’t be punished nor lose our tools to seizure or forfeiture.”
The Alaska Supreme Court, in State vs. Strange (1990), has also had to consider how to define gravity knife and switchblade in the absence of a statutory definition.
HB 33 now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration and possible reconsideration with SB 11 (see below).
The Alaskan session ends April 15th, so contact your Senators and ak them to vote yes on this bill this year.
There should be *no* restrictions on the ownership and carry of knives, except that places that are sensitive enough to restrict police from being armed, should also be able to restrict non-police from being armed.

Every folding knife I own is an “automatic”.
I disagree the Federal 2nd ammedment does not apply to alaska nor any political subdivision there too.
Alaska is subject only to the Alaskain Constitution in theses regards.
The relevant clause is: Article I, Section 19:
Ҥ 19. Right to Keep and Bear Arms
A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The individual right to keep and bear arms shall not be denied or infringed by the State or a political subdivision of the State. [Amended 1994]”
Still i find myself perplexed as to why anyone would want to outlaw Switchblades or Gravity Knives.

Finding to put logic in the acts of a liberal is like trying to find water on the moon. It exist only in very tiny amounts that are at this point not cost effective to extract.

Kansas is moving legislation to allow switchblades also.

-It definitely gives you an advantage when defending yourself from a surprise attack. You can pull out the knife faster and always have a free hand. Not much advantage for an attacker because they have the element of surprise.
-People defending themselves or doing anything themselves is the last thing the control freak liberals want. They want people defenseless and at the mercy of the Gestapo “for their own good”.
I understand that liberals don’t like anyone who follows the law being armed. In part because they fear people might hurt themselves, in part because they think lawful people might hurt them.
But a knife presses even their bounties, in any event as the Alaskan Constitution makes even more clear than the Federal Constitution any such law passed by either Alaska or any subdivision there of is unconstitutional.
The act of the Alaska ledglsator is at best enforcing Alaska’s already existing Constitutional prohibition.
