People aren’t automatons, they chose to panic.

That is precisely the point. Why did they make such a choice? What factors led to the choice?

If this all came out of thin air with no motivation, I would tend to agree that people made a choice without appropriate information. But that is NOT the case. There was plenty of information that indicated a problem.

It would be stupid to ignore such a situation.

Now that it is assumed that the information was faulty, why do you choose to place no fault with those who put such information out?

Go back to huffpost.

The reason there's an ammunition shortage is that people are buying a lot of ammunition. It's very simple.

It's a self-perpetuating feedback loop. There was panic buying after Newtown, and once reports of shortages popped up, even more people panicked and went out to buy ammunition, leading to more shortages, more panic buying, and so on. The silly panic over DHS ammo purchases (but not the small purchases themselves) has increased the phenomenon even more.

For gun owners, the answer to "why is there an ammo shortage" can be found by looking in a mirror.

Your explanation is correct, but a lot of people aren't going to want to let go of this "great DHS ammunition stockpile" conspiracy theory. The Alex Jones crowd, in particular, is going to be regurgitating this conspiracy no matter how clear the evidence is that it's a myth.

They are testing common rounds found by US gun owners against body armor.

Millions of times? How many times do they need to do that, to know what rounds Level IIA protection will stop?

Nope, don't think so.

And training with expensive, premium warshot rounds? Instead of ballistic-equivalent hardball rounds for half the price? Mmmmmmm .... not pleasing, either.

This sounds like one of those John Lovett routines of "would you believe ....?"

“If this all came out of thin air with no motivation, I would tend to agree that people made a choice without appropriate information.”

People have motivation for most every decision they make, but they are still responsible for their decisions. So the panic buyers, regardless of their motivation, are responsible for the shortage.

“Now that it is assumed that the information was faulty, why do you choose to place no fault with those who put such information out?”

If you’re talking about these DHS ammo myths, then whoever put them out is guilty of deceiving people, whether that was intentional or unintentional. I don’t see how they are responsible for the subsequent decisions of adults though.

Also, the stories were known to false very shortly after they were propagated, within days at the latest. Yet, some people, as evidenced by this thread, neglect to verify an outlandish story before believing it, and some even refuse to stop believing and propagating these tall tales after the contrary evidence is handed to them on a silver platter. I’m not going to blame anyone but them for their own gullibility and lack of critical thinking.

“Go back to huffpost.”

Childish taunts don’t win arguments around here, but go ahead and keep making them. They’ll only damage your credibility, not mine.

You’re right, but as long as there are reasonable FReepers who debunk the kooky hoaxes, this site won’t become a PrisonPlanet clone. It may take a while, but the tide usually turns against the falsehoods if they keep getting answered with truth.

A healthy distrust of the government by the citizenry is a good thing but it’s getting pretty nutty around here. Some of the cr*p people are posting as fact on this and other sites is really becoming embarrassing. From day one this ammo story, the MRAP buys and the thousands of drones don’t pass the smell test for anybody who actually knows how these things work. Unfortunately these tall tales have really gotten some folks to go over the edge.

The administration certainly doesn’t help itself either by not providing prompt coherent and verifiable (without risking security) answers. Just my 2 cents.

Talked to the ICE rep on the congressional DHS committee...Seemed like a decent guy, he actually called me back...This was about two weeks ago...He gave me his personal cell number, and his credentials check out...

We did the math...He admitted that the DHS and affiliated agencies utilizing all this ammunition would amount to about 17,000 shooters...I know that sounds a lot, but do the math...

Worse case it came out to be about 34-3500 rounds a year...For training purposes...

I’m sure there would be some sandbagging (I didn’t make that comment to the guy), but it all started to add up over the timeframe of the delieveries of this ammunition...They will not get it ALL in one big hunk...It’ll come in 5-10, maybe even about 30-35 million round lots from the manufacturers, as they get them produced...

Now...Of course we should take this with a grain of salt...I did my own diggin’ through my own investigation and sources, and putting all of this together was certainly a challenge, but I am confident of the information as it stands now...

The MRAP issue is pretty much put to bed...That leaves us the 7000+ personal defense rifles (select fire weapons) to figure out...And the many armored checkpoint booths they have purchased for purposes unknown at this time...

I did not broach that subject with my contact at that time...I believe we should still be alert to things popping up on the radar, and be ready to instigate our inquiries at that time...The reason being is that we cannot trust the current adminstration to be transparent at all on issues like this (obviously), and we need to foment and maintain good communications with those folks we believe can give us good answers...Then we can put it all together and connect the dots...

That’s my committment to this deal...

That is 4 penny’s a round!

I watched MiniMags go for 25 cents a Piece at 2400 lots!

“Unfortunately these tall tales have really gotten some folks to go over the edge.”

Which arguably, may be the desire of whoever keeps concocting them. If you want to demonize some group, one method is to goad them into doing something that the public will condemn.

I believe if the government ever does start rounding up dissenters, as some of us fear, it can only be after someone gives them the excuse to do so by turning the tide of public opinion against themselves. We couldn’t have put the Japanese in internment camps until Pearl Harbor happened.
